Believe it or not this came from a mintset.

This coin came from a mint set I bought a while back. I wouldn't believe it unless I saw it myself... this coin gets bagged as AT every time... but I can attest that it's not.

Most AT coins I've seen in hand don't have the streaked look like yours does. Very attractive toning.

I don't believe you! Ok I do. I am a toner lover, and that is obviously NT to me. Very nice. Send it to me.

Odd look for a 50's mint set silver coin (which is what I believe Matt was alluding to in his title), but that is a REALLY cool toning pattern on the obverse.

    It's almost like leopard print.

Did the packaging seem abnormal? (box or envelope) What did the Half and Qtr look like?

The other silver coins were typical toned mint set coins. They got sent in and holdered and were sold.... the coin got bagged... and I just found it cleaning off my desk so I cracked it and took some pictures.

But this coin would have come from a two-of-each mint set which (correct me if I'm wrong) were not packaged in plastic and were thus more exposed to the air. This, I think, could explain why the coin is toned, and on only one side.

Tho rare to find originally the sleeves in the early mint sets were wrapped in celophane.

It's too bad that had you known at the time there was the risk of getting bagged, you would have been better off to submit the entire set still in the original cello.

Whenever I have a coin (mostly Morgans) that is questionable, I always wait until I renew my membership with NGC and send it in as one of the freebies.

Beautiful coin! Getting bagged shows the TPG's can't even properly ID toning....paranoia rules the day.

Specifically what sets are you talking about Matt ? To my knowledge the only time cellophane was ever used in any mint packaging was on the 1955 and earlier Proof sets.

They never could, neither can anybody else.

There was no original cellophane. The '53 Mint Sets were in cardboard holders with a paper over-lay.

But even if there had been, it would not have made any difference. The reason it would not have made any difference is because when coins are submitted in original mint packaging, the coins are removed from that packaging before the graders ever see the coin.

There are many cases where coins were submitted in original mint packaging and some of those coins were bagged for being AT.

I recently bought a sealed 53 mint set. I did not open the set but the person who I sold it to opened it in front of me and the paper covered sleeves were wrapped in very thin yellowed and almost crumbling celophane. I have seen other sets at shows wrapped the same way as well. Both the outer mailing envelope and the inner envelope were sealed.

I wonder if this was something the mint was experimenting with. I have spoken with some other dealers who seem to think so.

Interesting. I collected original sets for most of my life and I never saw, or even heard of anything like that. And no book or article I've ever read mentioned anything like that.

I'm not saying 100% that this was done at the mint so don't take my experiences as the gospel of course. I have seen envelopes reseal themselves over the years... but this thing sure looked originally sealed to me and I have seen others. The dealers I talked to about it were some of the big movers of government stuff.

This nickel was also in the same set as the dime I posted.. and was a no grade as well.

Looks like an experiment gone wrong. Weak strike to boot. Wish I could have seen the other silver to see the toning. How did the cent tone?
