Since christmas is coming up, i was going to get my 12 year old brother prince of persia: the warrior within. But he said hed rather have coins than a game, and he already has: 1939 Quarter, 1971 Eisenhower Dollar, 1943 Mercury Dime, 1962 and 1959 Franklin Half Dollars, and a 1944 Walking Liberty Half Dollar. He only has these because i won them at walmart *one of those stupid arcade games*. I was wondering what i should get him for christmas. He is interested in old coins that are rarely seen, major errors (Nothing where you need a x3 magnifer to see), and old coins.
I was thinking of getting him these:

I want your opinions on these, and if i should get him something else. I am also a collector, but not like he is. Trading, buying and selling transactions are limited to the Open Forum and the Auctions Forum.

At least to those of us who were alive at the time, particularly if our collections include 1,000+ year old items, coins from the 1930's aren't considered "old". :D Here is a discussion about some real "old" coins!

I'm afraid I can't make any recommendations, since without knowing your brother, it's pretty tough to guess what present would please him the most.

I can make a recommendation. Get him a subscription to a coin magazine or a membership to the ANA.

Well 1930's are old to him. I dont really know if he'd like the magazines, he only reads when he has to.

A fundamental concept of numismatics is "buy the book before the coin". If your brother isn't interested in reading about coins, I question his long-term collecting success.

On the other hand, if he's really interested in coins, he might fool you. I have a nephew not much older than him who also tried to avoid reading until he got interested in, of all things, geography, and became an avid National Geographic reader.

He has a book of what the coins are worth, he hasnt looked through it much because he hasnt gotten any new coins. My brother is a HUGE gamer, if he says he wants coins instead of a game *Mother bought him $300 worth of games last year* then he must really be interested in it. Im just trying to find out some "old" coins that hed like. It is my personal opinion that he would like those in the link that i posted. I wanted your opinion if this is a good deal, or if im getting ripped off. I will look into the magazines tho, is there anything else i/he should know before i get him coins?

Have you given any thought to world coins? They have a way of captivating the kids with their interesting designs, shapes and compositions. My son is 7 and his interests range from world coins to Morgans and just about everything in between. And considering that your brother is a gamer, he'd probably really appreciate some of the unique designs on some of the coins...warriors, animals, etc.

Thats not a bad idea, I was thinking of buying some world coins for myself, he might like them too.

    Hello,

I would have to give that seller a pass.
His TOS (terms of sale) are not at all customer friendly.
Shipping, handling, and insurance, would cost way too much from that guy.
I wouldn't waste my time, or money, on somebody like that.

I think joesmom made an excellent suggestions (though I also agree that it is hard to suggest anything since none of us know what your brother likes). My kids like world coins because not only can you get something "old", but it also comes from someplace far away... (and yes, I like world coins for the same reason, but I wasn't going to say it).

From the coins that he has alraedy accumulated, it sounds like he would be pleased with just about any coin that he recieves, it may take awhile for a new collector to actually pick a favorite coin or denomination to pursue.

Take a look at the mint marks of the coins your brother has and fill in the small sets for him by mint mark.

I think getting your brother some coins is a great idea and you sound like a great brother. The coins you picked looked like three great picks but Jody gave you some good advice. Look for some more picks with different dealers and then ask the forum again.

Being a nice brother most of the time is pretty good in my book. I have three young sons myself and I hope they will always remember that their brothers are not only brothers but also their best friends, especially as they get older. Good luck with your present!
