I don't collect Canadian coins, but I found a Canadian nickel I would like to ask about. It of course has Elizabeth's profile on the obverse, but the reverse depicts an animal--a beaver, I think--with "5 cents" above the animal and "Canada 2003" below it. The initials "KG" to the left of the beaver, I assume, are those of the designer. This coin is in such superb, mirror-like condition that I could almost believe it is a proof. I would appreciate anyone who can tell me something about this appealing coin.

There were 4 different varieties from 2003. Two of each with the "crowned" portrait and "uncrowned" or "mature" portrait. Each of those were made with no mintmark (cupro-nickel) and with a "P" mintmark (plated steel). My 8-year old son is the one who alerted me to the differences. There are plenty of each one, so none of them are particularly more scarce than any other.
That's very kind of you, DJCoins, and I appreciate the sentiment. However, you still won't see much of me on the "boards." My interest in numismatics has reached a low point and probably will remain there. I would also like to thank CoinGal07 for her informative response to my post. In fact, cheers to everybody at Coin Talk.
