Thought it might be interesting for a beginner to see what a coin show looks like. Anyone ever been to this show? -Matt
That one's a little far off for me, but a few quick words of advice, good at someone's first coin show, wherever it is: Keep your wallet in your pocket on your first pass through the bourse! Get a feel for what's out there, and the pricing, before you make any purchases. Take a loupe and whenever possible examine coins under daylight or incandescent light, not flourescent. If possible, carry a price guide for the material you are most interested in, but don't forget that a price guide is only a guide, not a gospel. Most important - have fun!
Advice well taken...my intent really was to go simply as an observer. I am reading a couple of books right now and want finish them and make a couple of decisions before I make any (even initial) purchases. As always, though, good advice. Thanks!
I feel kinda left out now after Satootoko's reply... a) I've never owned a loupe b) I've never been to a coin show c) I've been collecting 15 years
That simply says your eyes aren't as bad as mine! No reason to feel bad there. I started collecting in the '50s and went to my first coin show about 2 years ago.
I'm shortsighted... so my eyesight up close is better than the average mans. Far away though and it's a whole different world!
You've been collecting since you were 5!? Ive never been to a coin show in my short collecting life. (1st post! )
Welcome JMD! Yeah i started when i was 5... and i'm still at it. I remember the old 5p's in circulation too, i remember when i first met the small ones, i didn't like them much, i still don't. But i was a collector of sorts before the new 5ps arrived, not long before... so i must have started around winter '89, spring '90. I'm a little hazy as to which, it could be either. I'm inclined to think 1990.
Howdy JMD - Welcome to the Forum !! It's been a while since I've seen your smiling face Stop by more often
Welcome, the Bay State show is a very nice little show. I highly recommend this one for the beginner and well versed. Go and enjoy.
I have been when it was in Boston. The traffic and parking were horrible. Now that it's out in Marlboro [with free parking] it seems like it would be easier to attend.
Bay State Show 2012! Anyone go today (nov 9)? Anyone going tomorrow? www.baystatecoinshow.com What did you get?!?
