What are Barr or Web notes and do they carry any value? Should i hang onto star notes even if they are not UNC?
Barr notes are Series 1963B $1's; they carry the signature of Joseph W. Barr as Secretary of the Treasury. He was only in office for a month, so this series has the lowest total printage of any $1 FRN, and no higher-denomination notes at all were printed with his signature. However, the Barr notes are still not all that scarce in an absolute sense--nearly 500 million were produced, and many were hoarded by folks who heard exaggerated stories of their value, so they're still remarkably common today. Circulated examples trade for pretty close to face value, I'm afraid. Web notes are $1's that were printed on an experimental press in the 1990's. They come in Series 1988A, 1993, and 1995, but in each case they make up a small minority of all $1's printed for the series. For identifying marks and serial ranges of the web printings, see this page. All web notes are worth over face value in pretty much any grade, and some of the scarce ones in top grades can be worth four figures. Some star notes have significant value even in circulated grades; it depends on the printage numbers for the block and, in some cases, the print run. If you find a star note in circulation, it's probably best to check it before spending it. Most circulated stars from recent series, though, will be worth essentially face value. Hope this helps!
Thanks for the information. As far as the star notes I have a couple of tellers that pull them when they see them and hold them for me. I didn't think the newer ones were worth much but they are cool any way.
Numbers offers great insight and always great info. I would also recommend browsing the site he linked to for a wealth of info as well. I have to agree with you on the star notes though premiums or not.. they are fun to collect lol
