Hi all some more good coins from ebay A morgan MS-64 A FS silver nickel MS-65 I paid $80 for this lot
Nice pair of coins. There can be some good deals found on holiday weekends sometimes, as many people are away from their computers. Hope you got one of these deals!
You are right i need to get myself a life and stop collecting for a while. I cant differentiate between peace or Morgan anymore. I will try and promise to take a break from tomorrow till June 19
LOL It's ok. If you are like me, you have a whole coffee table full of coins laid out at any given time. You may have been looking at a Morgan off to the side of your easy-chair while writing the post.
i am so depressed today I lost at the pre long beach event and it wasnt due to lack of bid it was coz of that stupid ebay. It wouldnt let me bid for some reason and I watched in horror as i lost one coin after another
Well, it really wasn't because of ebay - it was because live auctions move too fast. And hopefully you'll trust me on this one - but trying to participate in a live auction via ebay is a BIG mistake. I highly recommend that no one ever try to do that. You can be making what you think is $125 bid and it will turn out to be a $1250 bid - or more. You see live auctions proceed at the rate of 200 - 250 bids per minute, that's 4 bids per second. Nobody has a chance of keeping up via a computer and on-line bidding. And since live ebay bidding always goes to the next highest increment automatically - if the live bid is $1200 when your bid comes in your bid just jumped to $1250 when all you wanted to bid was $125.
Thats all very fine but how do you suppose i get the coins then? They were Portuguese rupees in very high quality rarely offered. My whole dream has gone sour I am sure you have another piece of advice that helps me become successful in these auctions?
Yeah, same one that has been around since the beginning. You establish a relationship with a dealer - or even better two or three in various parts of the country. Then when there is an auction with coins you want you find which dealer will be attending that auction, tell him your max bid amount, and let him buy the coins for you. Other option is you contact the auction house and bid by phone. Now you can suit yourself, I'm not trying to tell you what to do - I'm just providing information. But it's accurate information - I personally know of over 100 people who have been burned in the exact manner I described by trying to bid in live ebay auctions. That's just the ones I know - there are plenty of others. In this day of ebay and internet auctions there is something that all too many coin collectors have forgotten - and that is that a good coin dealer is your very, very best friend. edit - by the way, if you want high quality Portuguese rupees I could probably put you in touch with at least 3 dealers who could find them for you.
From a process standpoint you are right on the money. I dont know if a dealer will take interest in bidding for things that typically don't cost too much $30-50 range sometimes going to $100. For this auction the phone option was disabled but i see that it was a waste of time bidding via ebay. If you could pas son the information about the dealers would appreciate it. also which of those three would your recommend the most. Thanks.
