 I don't know if anybody's noticed, but 2005 Westward Journey nickel sets and mint rolls (the ones the Mint recently stopped selling) are selling for bargain basement prices right now on eBay. I just saw 2 different 2005 Westward Journey 6 coin sets won for $10.50, lower than the Mint price!!!! I've also seen Ocean View Mint boxes selling for as low as $10 and $11 bucks a piece. Even the 2005 Silver Proof Sets are selling for just a couple bucks above cost.

I guess you all know where my Christmas money went! I think all of these sets are going to increase greatly in value in the next year or two, so to all the goofy sellers that keep dumping their entire inventories on eBay right now without checking to see how low the demand is, THANK YOU!!!!!!! I guess because the Mint closed out they think the demand is automatically there. I'll be laughing all the way to the bank when a $10.50 2005 Westward Journey Nickel Series set goes up to $70 or $80 bucks next year.....YEEEEE HAAAA!

Don't take my word for it, just type the keywords in eBay and see for yourself! I think because it is the in between Christmas and New Years slow time and the fact that alot of not-so-bright sellers are just loading tons of these things for sale without even checking to see if they're hot sellers or not(duh*&*^%%^$!!!!!).........It's great for those of us who missed the December 24th Mint deadline! In a way, these sellers have extended the Mint deadline lol, cause I can just pickup stuff for the same price essentially. I'm stocking up baby!

Yea, well, winning an auction on Ebay for ten bucks and actually receiving the item are two different topics I think. ;)

I recall getting a couple of bargains then and again on Ebay, and the seller somehow losing the item and refunding my payment.

I disagree with you on what's going on right now (not that bad things can happen- I always scrutinize the ratings and ID history, etc). It's simple supply and demand. Just do a "Completed Listing" search for the 3 hot items (Ocean View Nickel Mint Boxes, 2005 Westward Journey 6 coin set, 2005 Silver Proof Set) and you'll see what I mean. I think it's as simple as sellers getting excited about the early closing at the Mint that took people off guard and then dumping most of their wares on eBay, hoping for quick riches without even checking to see what the stuff is selling for. I think by the time next week rolls around the buying public will realize that they can't buy this stuff at the Mint anymore and then there will be a price adjustment due to demand. That's why I'm getting while the gettin's good!

Thanks for the tip, I purchased 6 sets for an average of 15 after shipping costs.

Cool beans! Which did you get, the 6 coin set or the Ocean in View Rolls?

I got rolls! I think I'm going to save some, and maybe break a few open, in hopes of a 68+ coin.

Awesome, I hope you find a good one in the bunch. CoinWorld just did a write up about errors in the Ocean in View. Speaking of which, I just bought 36 sealed mint boxes of Ocean in View about 3 days ago from an Ebay Store that didn't know about the Mint closing sales. I got them all for about $11 bucks a box! I also bought a lot of 10 2005 Silver Proof Sets for about $40 a piece! Bargains bargains bargains!

Bargains???...how can that be a bargain when all you had to do was go to a bank a few months ago and get them for face value?

    Speedy,
I bought the US Mint issued P&D Westward Journey Series sealed boxes, which I hope at some point get close to the Peace Nickel Mint Boxes ($110 a box on eBay). You can't buy them at banks. If you had actually read my post I said that Westward Journey products that were discontinued recently by the Mint (Dec. 25th) are what I'm buying. Please read first before leveling inane comments^&%&$#$#

    I didn't say fact ones :D

I did read first...but you don't seem to understand...the coins you get from the mint are the same coins you get from the bank...they aren't minted any other way...they aren't higher grades....all that is changed is the paper that is wrapped around them.....since when is paper worth that much $$$.
Also if you go back and read what the mint has done in the past I bet you will find that later down the road they will "find" some more of these coins in a back room...they seem to lose lots of coins in that back room...

And, we all know that coin collectors never pay a premium for the packaging. ;)

(in case it's not obvious, that's a sarcastic post)

    Speedy,

With all due respect, I didn't ask for your opinion on who likes Mint wrapped nickels, etc. I was just letting everyone know that now is the time to buy any of the products on eBay that the Mint stopped selling due to the legislation that made them stop on the 25th (which took many by suprise, including yours truly). This left me to buy from eBay, which usually kills people after a sellout due to high prices. Well, because of several not so savvy sellers who are throwing their entire collections onto eBay for sale, I can just buy away at almost Mint cost, at least until everyone wakes up after New Years and the prices soar.

As for the nickels, I happen to like the wrapping and like the pizazz it adds as well as the commemorative value, as opposed to a reserve bank wrapping, which could be filled with recirculated coins. I also like that they are in US Mint Sealed boxes, which keeps the elements at bay from the exposed nickel ends. Party on.......

Loosely borrowing the hallowed words of my nephew (a smart 4 year old).

There are 4 kinds of nickels available

P - for the kind in your pockets
D - for the kind in Dad's pockets
    S - special shiny ones
Nothing - old ones that are green and stink

Now taking this philosophy personally a step farther I have developed my own theory.. (a not so smart 46 year old)

There are 3 kinds of nickels

    a. ones that you get from the mint.
    b. ones that you get from the bank.
    c. ones you find in your pocket.

    a. is much better than b. because they are prettier, and have that new car smell. b is better than c. because they are shinier and don't have bubble gum on them generally. c is sometimes good, but most of the time are green and stink.

Well, I missed out on the peace nickels but bought a couple of 2004 nickel sets and a couple of keelboat roll sets and a couple of 2004 mint sets. Then I bought 20 sets of 2005 bison roll sets thinking they would be hot!

I sold my 2004 nickel sets $40+ each my 2004 mint sets $60+ each.
I've lost money on my 2005 bison roll sets and if you look at the keelboat sets they are selling for only a couple of dollars over issue price. I just don't see the 2005 stuff going anywhere in price I think the HYPE is dying.
As far as the mint rolls being better than what you get from the bank (It's the same stuff wrapped by the same company). I desided to open up a Bison Nickel roll set instead of give it away for less than I paid for it, there wasn't even one MS65 in the lot! I've see better examples in my pocket change!

I hope you are right that they go up in value (at least until I can make my money back) but look at history does 1976 ring a bell.

    :D :D ....nope not me :D :D

And I'm sorry for posting.....but since this is a forum and many people read it I thought I would post my 2-cents along with someone else....and since we didn't agree I think that is good....that way people can read both sides and then decided what one is right.
