I recently purchased a home in Louisiana, and left on the wall was a framed glass enclosed photo display or plaque of 14 silver coins or medallions circled around a reprinted photo of Jesus on the cross, entitled "The Way of the Cross." It was produced by Barco Mint of New Orleans. I see that Barco has also produced some minted space coins for NASA, but can find little else about the company, and nothing about this particular display. Does anyone know the history behind this plaque, and when it might have been created? Is Barco Mint still in business? Not finding any further references. Thanks! for any information.
There is no listing for a company by that name in the New Orleans telephone directory and only a few references to them on Google. It appears that they specialized in medals made from discarded NASA parts used in the lunar missions. They're probably long gone. http://www.check-six.com/Museum/Space-m2.htm
Thanks for looking! In a Catholic web store I found the photo in the center, which is from a book cover, so possibly this was commissioned by the church years ago. I very much apperciate you taking the time to try to find out information.
Barco mint was renames to The New Orleans Mint. They are still active in the city as they mainly produce Mardi Gras Doubloons now.
Do the medals around the cross depict the 13 stations of the cross? Catholic churches usually have the stations of the cross on the churches walls. These are used as a visual during lent especially Good Friday . They depicting the last days of Jesus before he was nailed to the cross. The 14 could be the Resurrection on Easter Sunday . Is there any images you could post?
Exactly what I was going to say. As a Catholic myself, I'm really curious as to what this looks like. Pics please.
I recently unearthed a token made by Barco Mint of New Orleans. It looks to be possibly for Mardi Gras. It has the address on LaSalle Street and est. 1968. Any one have any ideas on this?
