I say it has been cleaned or dipped. Something is wrong with it at the least.

I'd say cleaned. Too many hairlines on the obverse.

I'll be honest I don't know much about the series. I'd give it that vf35 type grade, however their is something funky with the surfaces. Cleaned with a re tone maybe. It's enough that I would stay away from it, but I'm not much help on this series. For that money I would try to get something slabbed if I were buying from ebay.

It is an honest VF+ example . There appears to be no indications of a harsh cleaning and is a good for the grade example, for me. The asking price is a bit high and perhaps could be negotiated down to $415.00-$425.00 . Solid buy IMHO for a truly tough date find. Complete " LIBERTY "

    NO!

I know the seller, it's raw for a reason IMO. And from looking at it that coin is simply not going to end up in a problem free holder.

It's been, at the very least, way overdipped. It's got 20-25 details.

Shame really, as the 98-O is one of the toughest Barber Halves... I'd say in the 4th or 5th spot, it's no 05-O or 93-S, but it's a tougher coin in problem-free original VF than an 04-S.

the dirt in the 8's and 9 of the date suggest cleaning to me.

The seller acknowledges the coin has an old cleaning . No surprise there.
