Interesting find for biblical scholars and numismatists (Sorry if this is a repost): I'm looking forward to further assessment of the numismatic discoveries. https://www.timesofisrael.com/bible...g-artifacts-found-in-dead-sea-cave-of-horror/ g.
Just saw this on the BBC. Really amazing. From the one pic, the coins didn't all look familiar, but my conversance with Bar-Kochba coins is superficial at best. The state of preservation is phenomenal. No less striking is that the scroll, with fragments from 'minor' prophets, is all in Greek, with only the word for G-d in Hebrew. A serious departure, in the space of a couple of generations or so, from the Dead Sea Scrolls. Odd how Hellenism would have accelerated in that amount of time (granted, following the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE), having already had three centuries. ...Where did Aramaic go? Does anyone know more about what was happening linguistically around this time?
I know very little about ancients and even less about the coins in the OP. Most of the time when I see Bar-Kochba coins they are off center and worn to a frazzle. The pictured coins in the OP look almost freshly minted. Just sayin'.
