You will be pleased to know that there is a banknote wiki website that has been set up.Here's a link to it; http://banknotewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page . Before you can contribute, you MUST register for your free account first. Aidan.
they weren't kidding about their site being "in the very early days"! i opened up a few random pages and they were all totally empty. Italy, Germany, Kuwait...all completely blank. then I open up Bahrain...and not only is it nearly complete, but somebody posted an uncirculated 1964 5 dinar note that i've been trying to find for the past several years! i haven't seen a single one for sale ever since i began collecting. :headbang: grrr...one of these days... anyway, this site will need a lot of luck if the goal is to be a "comprehensive guide for collectors". they'll face plenty of competition from ron wise's site...which is already the official "comprehensive guide" for the International Banknote Society.
Drusus,it is completely separate from Wikipedia. It is actually run by someone in Australia. The object is for any notaphilist to sign up & create articles.I think it is better to divide each section by signatory, then by series.I think 'P','PM',& 'PS' catalogue numbers should be added. Aidan.
a "wiki" is a type of server software that allows users to freely create and edit web page content. a database that anybody can add to or edit. wikipedia, being the most famous website of the type, is an encyclopedia wiki. anybody can use the software to make a wiki on any subject they want. news: http://en.wikinews.org/wiki/Main_Page video games: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Main_Page cities: http://rocwiki.org/
oh...I just thought it looks exactly the same as wikipedia...you CAN customize and not make it look exactly like wikipedia right?
Yes,that is correct.I think that we should turn that wiki into an online Pick catalogue, but without the grades & prices being listed. What do you think? Aidan.
what you're proposing is exactly what's already on the ron wise site. why go through all that hard work if all that will come from it is an exact duplicate of something that already exists? at least ron wise gives credit to people who contribute scans. each picture on his site lists the person's name right under the photo link. the wiki doesn't have that. so on top of being tedious, nobody will ever know you did it.
one advantage this new site might have is if the great britain and turkey sections are completed. ron wise had to remove those sections from his website at the request of their national banks.
SanMiguel,Ron Wise has a very good website, which is true, but he doesn't list everything. The Banknote Wiki could be an improvement on this.As soon as new banknotes come out & get listed in Pick, then the wiki would be updated accordingly. In the case of where a country has had several issuers like Dominica,England,New Zealand,& Canada, just to name a few,we could create separate listings for each issuer. Aidan.
yeah, the wiki format would definitely be easier to update as far as new issues go. the problem for now is getting the thousands of already-existing notes uploaded into the new database. the easiest thing to do would be to snag pictures off of one site and transfer it to the other.but while ron gives permission to freely use his own images for positive/educational purposes...he can't give permission for the donated images that aren't his. if i had the free time, i might consider transferring my entire collection over. heheh...but i'm not exactly in a position to be cataloging thousands of banknotes at the moment. maybe next year.
You are right. It is a very tedious & labourious job,but I have already created articles for the banknotes of Somaliland, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe,& the South African Reserve Bank so far. Aidan.
i already took the time to scan and upload images onto the internet. i also took the time to add extra information about the notes so that people could find out who and what each country put on their money. it took me forever! but it's not on banknote wiki. it's on my own website. it's a labor of love, but i don't love it enough to do it all over again when there's no reason to. http://public.fotki.com/sanmiguel/
