    Nice.
Ypsilanti is about 40 minutes from me, it's near Ann Arbor.

A town nearby to me is Port Hueneme. A tourist going through saw the name and stopped at a fast food restaurant to ask "How do you pronounce the name of this place?" The answer came back..............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ready?................................................................................................................................................................"Burger King".

I went to college in Ypsi! We disparagingly referred to some of the less-educated parts of town as Ypsitucky.

Actually, it was named after a Greek military hero.

Makes more sense to me. Here in Germany quite a few know the name because not too long ago Andrea Ypsilanti had plans to become Hessian governor. (Was not successful but she still is a member of the state parliament.) Then again, the German way of pronouncing a Greek name may very well be different from the English pronunciation. :)
