I went to the bank today to deposit my $1000 in halves I had searched and I asked if they had any hand rolled in. She had $20 worth of pennys. I picked them up and saw three rolls had a wrap on them from a local bank in my town so I started with those. In those three rolls I found a 1904 Indian Head and a 1939 Wheat Back! Just curious, when is the last time anyone has pulled an indian from a bank roll?
I found an Indian cent from 1889 last year. At the time, this was the oldest coin I had ever found from over 10 years of searching by approximately 30 years (I have since found a V nickel from 1906). Finding an Indian Head Cent is rare (1 per an average of 30,000 cents searched from an article I read that was written in 1995) but they do appear in circulation from time to time and they are so fun to find when they turn up.
You're results may vary... Other searchers I have talked to are at about my average too though. I think that's just how it is now. The article NOS referenced was written in 1995, almost 20 years ago. I'm sure tons have been pulled from circulation since then.
Ok, after reading your post last night I went off to the bank this morning with $77.00 in halves. They had none to replace the ones I brought in but said they would order and I could pick them up on Thursday. I did however leave with ten dollars of the clear wrapped pennies. To my surprise I found what appears to be an unplated 1990 D zinc. I have attached pictures, please offer thoughts on my find.
It's not an unplated cent. It has been stripped of it's copper plating. You can still see bits of copper on both the obverse and reverse.
Thanks for your thoughts. Would it be possible what we see and think is bits of copper, could be rust. Or would that only occur on steel?. In hand it looks like rust. Tom
