So when I first started collecting coins I saved any and all half dollars, in hopes that they would end up being worth more than face value. Then I realized that I could order half dollars from the bank, which made all of my clad halves worth pretty much face value. But how long before this ends? I mean half dollars are no longer minted for circulation which means that they should eventually not be available from the fed. My question is how far in the future do you guys think that will be?
Well, part of the point is, they were minted in such huge quantities - during the circulating years - that there will never be enough demand to give them much numismatic value. The post-circulating mintages are much lower, and not available from the Fed at all, just the Mint and private secondary market.
This is true .....but........the real killer is that 1971-Today are available in US Mint Sets. As such, BU Rolls will be available for a very, very long time. Having said that, it is important to note that "Original Bank Wrapped" rolls between 1971 and 1984 are going to have a strong premium associated with them. The trick, is in establishing whether or not its an original bank wrapped roll or a "mint set put together" roll. Usually mint set coins come with "scrapes" across the high relief areas (cheek and Shield/Eagles Head). Find any scrapes on the high points of a coin in a roll you've purchased and there's a .999 probability its a put together roll. An original mint sewn bag would carry a stiff premium. I don't recall ever seeing a mint sewn bag of Kennedy's although they could definitely be ordered in the 70's. A $500 mint sewn bag of 72-D's could go for $1,500 IMO for what its worth. Generally speaking, circulated CnClad Kennedy's will command face value unless it's a well known variety in a higher grade.
