I am always a little sad on Bank Day. That is when I get around to taking stuff in for the SDB, (not an easy feat in the Covid world). Its always a little sad to see my friends go. I have 4 full boxes and some misc to put in there today. One would think, 'hey, its just going in the SDB, you can always visit", but I usually don't. Once in the SDB I don't really have much "coin time" and pragmatically they just sit there waiting for my retirement someday. The other coins in my 3 SDB's can attest to that. It was fun digging them out of the safe yesterday and seeing them again, but now its time for them to go on the long sleep in the bank. I guess I will have to buy some more replacements!
I can relate . . . I have 2 boxes . . . one for my collection, pre-2006, and the other for my inventory. I go into and out of my stock box regularly but, sadly, I almost never visit the collection . . . mostly for lack of time.
Keeping them locked up in a SDB seems to take the fun out of the hobby. I look at my stuff everyday....
Not me. At any given time the vast majority of my stuff is in the bank SDB, but "Bank Day" means I have contemplated the stuff I have at home so thoroughly that it is time to exchange them for something new (old, different). On Bank Day I look forward to seeing some of my old friends again. The people at my bank know me and are very friendly, so it is no problem to put coins away and get some new ones out. I can understand feeling sad if I thought they would out of sight for years, but for me that is not the case.
Yeah, but I am uncomfortable having that level of value in my home. Yeah, I have a bolted safe, but still. No sense making my house that attractive should anyone ever learn of it. I feel better having it out of my physical control, so as to increase safety. I am already starting to forget what I own nowadays. I have always prided myself on my memory, but the numbers overwhelm me nowadays. Heck, just the coins I boxed up to put in the SDB today I do not remember buying some of them. Imagine what it is like of the stuff I bought 20 years ago. When I am retired it will be like inheriting a coin collection!
You do it differently than I do sir. Just like I always buy coins, I always just put coins in the SDB. So, its always farewell until an unknown time in the future, a one way street. I COULD pull coins out to look at again, but I simply never have time with current purchases, let alone old friends. Like I said, I am counting on one day to be able to actually sit down and enjoy them, so am buying them now to enjoy later. For some coin series, like CLEO VII, I am sure glad I have. Many coins come onto the market over the years only to disappear after the hoard is dissipated. I am glad I have grabbed some along the years to enjoy later.
