My teller called to tell me a customer had brought in $529 worth of Ike Dollars loose in a bag and asked if I would be interested in them. I quizzed her about the customer thinking he's probably a collector and has already picked them over for nice specimens, proofs, varieties, etc. He told her he had been "throwing them in his bag as he got them". Anyway, I took the gamble and bought the whole lot and will start going through them tonight. I did a little research into the different varieties and found this article on thespruce.com to help as I go through them: https://www.thespruce.com/eisenhower-dollar-varieties-768205 I plan to keep any proofs, rare varieties, and hole fillers for my folder. Are the other "run of the mill" circulated Ikes worth more than face value and should I keep them all? I don't really want to hoard that many if they are worth a buck each. I already have about 150 circulated Ikes, none of them proofs. Thanks.
You might find some customers for circ Ikes but by the time shipping cost is accounted for, you'll probably be lucky to break even.
I was in a similar situation on a smaller scale. I received 150 Ikes, nothing special so I posted on a facebook group for my town which is like a yard sale sort of thing. I was able to sell 150 dollars worth for 170 total and i didn't have to ship.
Look at the 71D for the friendly eagle, the 72 for type I, II and III. The type II being the rarest. Also look for die clashes, I'm still looking for a clashed bicentennial. The web site ken454 gave is a good place for info on these.
As already said, there is a very small market for the common circulated Ikes. But I just spend them into circulation. People get a kick out of them. Great for tips or for paying at the fast food. I also give them out as change when I'm doing farmers markets selling my dates. Especially at Christmas time when folks like them to give as gifts to kids or grand-kids. (OK its like way not any where near Christmas... just saying that's what I do with them)
