I ran across this coin and have no clue where it is from or what is it worth. I am interested mainly in finding the history of this coin, secondly the value. I don't expect it to be worth all that much, but it is kinda interesting. It looks arabic and it about the size of a silver dollar. Can anyone help?
Based on the dates at the left and right of the head, the script seems to be Arabic-Turkish. I believe those dates are 1295 and 1324, which would be roughly equivalent to 1878 and 1906. There doesn't appear to be any denomination on the coin, and most (not all) muslim coins I have seen do carry a denomination. Double dates usually indicate some kind of commemoration, so perhaps it is a medal commemorating the (short) life of the person shown. A quick run through of the Instant Identifier section of Krause didn't turn up anything, and a page by page search through 2200+ pages of the 1901-present volume just isn't feasible. What's needed is someone who can read the legend.
I think it's a medal probably depicting the Nejd (central Saudi Arabia) emir Abdul Aziz ibn Mitaab Al Rashid (b. 1870 - d. 1906), one of the ancestors, I believe, of the present Saudi royal family. Perhaps there are other medals in a series of early to present rulers. http://www.rulers.org/ruls1.html Please take the time to put the pictures right side up if possible next time!
