Well I bought a coin from an internet seller, and he had it advertised as an O mintmark, but when I get it its a D mintmark. It wasnt that expensive, I only paid $45 but the D mintmark is worth much less so I sent him an email and see what he says. He sent it stapled into a cardboard holder so its clearly the same coin I will be sending back. Fortunatly, he had some writing on the cardboard so that shows its coming back in teh same cardboard and hasnt been changed out. Just sent him an email, and I am hoping this works out. I dont want to pay 45 for a 10 coin. This ever happen to anyone. I would think someone would be more careful to not mistake a D for an O but mistaked happen I guess.
I have never received the wrong mint mark, but I have sent many a coin back for many reasons (usually because it was cleaned). If you bought it from a reasonable seller, you should have no problems. However, be sure that you send it back with delivery confirmation. If it should happen to wind up with a dispute, PayPal requires that as a minimum. Just for common courtesy, it would be nice if you emailed (phoned?) him first.
Key word there...sometimes! "Excuse me, I ordered the 1909 VDB for $75, and you gave me the 1909 S-VDB. I want my money back!"
Might you be talking about a 1909-D Vs a 1909-O Barber Quarter? If it was the dime you`d be way better off. I see no diff in the half. I can think of no other coins in the $45 range that overlaps the "O" and "D" mintmarks that have any signifiicant difference in value.
The dealer should be reasonable about this. Mislabeling a 2x2 is something that can happen. Hopefully it wasn't the case of a dealer being deceptive.
Actually it has happened to me, twice. I got a coin that was listed without mentioning the mintmark, and got one with. A $5 coin worth $25.
yes bzcollector. Good call. Thats the exact coin. Well I have emailed him 3 times, no response. I called the number and got a woman, she said he was out and call back tommorow. I am thinking I may have gotten taken. Sent the coin back with a reciept that it was sent. So now I wait.
Coin was listed as VG and I would say it was VG, so maybe the mintmark thing was a mistake. Pretty clearly a D though. So now I kind of half expect him to say its not the same coin, although I dont see how he can. Just the no response to my 3 emails in almost a week now is making me concerned. At least I only paid $45
You may end up eating it in the end, or you may get a nice resolution, either way you'l be warier in the future.
