I was at a coin shop I had never been in before. When I first got into the door I felt like I was unwelcome. I had to wait a good five minutes before I could see the coins I wanted to see, while the owner was busy with something else. I wanted to see a 1911-s Lincoln cent and a 1909-S Lincoln. The 1909-S was $160 an he graded it in XF condition but it had a dark area next to the back of Lincoln's head that took up about 1/10 of the whole design. The 11's was graded VF by the owner and in my opinion was closer to a High Fine grade. I also wanted to see if he had a Grey sheet I could buy (the other shops I visit sell these to the customers). I knew I did not want the 1909-s, but was still interested in purchasing the 11-S. I ask if they had a greysheet I could buy and the owner got all defensive, rudley saying no and that nobody looks at his grey sheet. I got a little upset at this and then asked about the price of the 11's (knowing that the price was a little high) he responded that he always prices everything above grey sheet. I hand the coin back said no thank you and promptly left. Probably never coming back.

I went up the road to a shop I visit quite often and promply spent $250 on several lower valued wheats.
    HIS LOSS!

It all comes down to customer service. I dont know when people are going to realize this and start treating people the way they would want there mothers to be treated.

One goes where they are welcomed. It's his loss Sweet Wheatz. He probably did you a favor though. You never want to deal with folks such as this. Glad you walked out and didn't let the door hit you in the behind.......:)

I ended up buying a 5000 ct box that I plan on not sorting through and running through a counting/ roll machine. I will list them starting at $5.00 per roll and explain that these were not searched by me or the shop owner (he buys by the pound and just dumps them into a box or bag site unseen but states that they could have possibly been searched before he got them). I will explain that in the listing also.

Nice pickup. So you buying wheats in bulk from private parties didn't work out?
Regardless you should look through the wheats to get a feel for them, if they're mainly 40's and 50's you may need to reprice the rolls. I got a 1000 wheats yesterday for 1.5 cents each. Haven't had a time to look at them yet. However if your still looking for wheats from private parties, some advertising can't hurt. Good luck with your sales.

I am gathering up some cash before I start advertising. I got the bulk just to help raise some more cash. You have to spend money to make money. If I get 5.00 per roll, I will make $100.00 after fees. I am hoping I can get more than $5.00 though.

Is this the same lot your breaking into dates?
Regardless craigslist is free and a great place to start. Also wheats are small profit but bulk sales. If you do separate by dates, any keys you find should be cherry picked. Keep semi keys in the rolls to keep repeat customers. Hope it helps you out get started

I have seen many of your posts and I feel that you are a person of integrity, but those who have not interacted with you will probably project their own lack of integrity and be sure that you already searched them. I have seen tons of posts where people comment that unsearched rolls of wheaties are probably a scam.

But good luck and I hope you do well.

    SweetWheatz,
There are always 2 sides to a story. But let me give my take on your story.
First, this is your first time to this coin store, You state you did not feel welcome right when you entered. Now, that already puts in your mind, that your uneasy. Next, you say you had to wait 5 minutes to see your coins or ask to to see them.
Usually when I go into a coin store (a new one or even my usual one),I go in and I look to see the traffic of the people, and if I see the people behind the counter busy at the moment, I browse around.!! You know, get a feel for the place.!! I look in their glass cases for maybe the coins I am looking for. Most coin shops have coins "grouped" together.
Unless you were in a real hurry, 5 minutes of browsing is nothing, and also gives you time to look around for your group of coins, look at his prices on other things, etc...
Ok, so then when you got to see your coins, you asked a Brand New Retail coin vendor to buy or look at a greysheet? LOL.!! :D
Sorry, I had to laugh at that one. That is where I think you made a big mistake, and may I explain...
Once you asked him for that greysheet, He immediatley knows that you know what it is, and know how to use one. Now, he thinks, "If this fella really had his act together, knowing what coins he wanted, why doesn't he already have his own greysheet?" Or at least know what his price that he wants to pay for these particular coins? Now, because this is your first time visiting, doesn't know you at all, and you are wanting his wholesale prices?:pencil:
Remember, he is a retail establishment. I believe you should of came in way more prepared. Including your own greysheet, or know your price barriers, as well as patience.
Most coins shops I know , don't just hand over there greysheet to every person that walks in the door. I think you need to give him another chance , Be patient, be really prepared, and try to have a nice conversation about coins and get a feel for him. Once a coin store sees you a few times, they tend to engage with you more. Some, if not most, may NEVER give you a look at their greysheet. Buy your own.!!
    That's what I do.
Why didn't you just get one at your regualer coin shop? Or at greysheet.com . Anyway, I am not trying to be harsh on your expieriance, as there are SOME coin shop owners who are really not social or negotiable in any manner, and quite frankly, seem to hate coins, LOL.!! :rolling:

  14. It is very interesting to me that you did not feel welcome right away. That is not a good environment for a business to portray to potential customers and it cost him a likely sale. Much of interpersonal communication is non-verbal, and you obviously sensed a negative vibe right away. I think you did the right thing by leaving and spending your hard-earned money elsewhere. You could give him another chance though. Maybe he was having a bad day. TC

I will list them as unsearched by me and was told that the shop owner did not search them, but may have been searched at one time before the shop owner got them. Full disclosure is the best way to go and I will let the chips ( or coins for this example fall where they may)

Im surprised a dealer (retailer) would act like that to a perfect 1st time buyer.
It sounds like you rubbed him the wrong way right out of the gate, and he didn't want to work on it in the least.
Poor excuse of a businessman none-the-less.

Sweet, you saying they are unsearched is a complete lie......you know and my brother knows you searched. I see through you as a complete lie... you are a penny searcher, why would you "NOT" search them after you bought them?

Shame on you.....and I dont believe your coin store story....it had more holes than your than a snowflake.

How is this a lie? !! I trust the owner and have no reason not to trust him. I am not saying that these are unsearched and I am even implying that they have been searched. So please step off and mind your own business.

Why the attack. I asked him if I could buy some and he told m I could but made sure to let me know there would probably be no keys in the rolls I was buying from him. I dont think they were a part of these he just bought but some he had extras of and rolled over the years.
Being that I am new to collecting, he could have just as easily told me these were unsearched but did not and gave me a really good deal.
So anyway, you should back off. I think he is a very honest person and respected in this forum.
