I am in the process of returning from a 10 day trip to China. I just landed in San Fran and will be taking my second Red Eye in the same day - how bizarre is that? Left Hong Kong at 10:30 PM on the 13th and I leave here at 10:25 PM on the 13th - I feel like a time traveler - LOL. I saw some interesting things in China. I visited a large flee market in Beijing looking/hoping to find some interesting coin deals. What I saw was about 300 people with blankets laid out with their various items. I stopped at about 30 of them and passed on three times as many that had coins of different sorts laid out. Without exception every dealer that had "silver" coins available had poor fakes! The weight felt like it was off by as much as 2 - 3rds. From Morgan dollars to trade dollars to Chinese coins. Needless to say I did not buy any coins as I was not in the mood to haggle over fake coins. I almost picked up a couple but just did not have the desire to own these poor imitations. I was happy to find a couple men selling old Asian notes! I look forward to posting pictures when I get home tomorrow. They were more expensive that I would have liked but I feel like I picked up some nice notes in very good condition. I also was able to get a few newer notes and coins in South China. It's great to be home (in the US) and I look forward to catching up on what has been happening on Coin Talk! Hope everyone is well! Best Regards Darryl
I just saw that - lol - I am a little tired but I think it had to do with the site logging me out (my fault for not selecting remember me) while building the thread. When I hit submit it sent me to the log in screen. I logged in then it didn't seem to progress from the redirect screen. When I hit proceed I think it doubled my post. I have a few neat notes - cannot wait to show them! Thanks - always godd to get back to the US!!! Darryl
Welcome backe Mate, I hope that you had a great time  and looking forward to seeing the pics Ps removed the double post for you
Howdy Darryl...welcome home... Very long flights huh?? Welcome to my world..LOL A few years back I was in Shanghi and it was truly the only place in the World I felt that if I came up missing, no one would care! Thousands of people on the streets 24 hrs a day...scary!! Glad you passed on the fakes....how did you like the local food?? LOL I have some stories for you on that one!! RickieB
Thanks Guys - Yes RickieB - Someone could go missing in China and I don't think anyone would notice. We were eating Chinese at higher end resturants and then KFC and McD's as well. Here are the notes: http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/HongKongPolymers.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/Taiwan1000DollarsNTD.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/Russia1909.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/Philippines10Pesos.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/Mongolia1908Year34.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/Japan1000Yen.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/HK20DollarHKD.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/HK20DollarHKD3.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/HK20DollarHKD2.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/HK20DollarHKD1-1.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/HK20DollarHKD1.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/HK10DollarHKD.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/CN196510Yuan.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/CN19605Yuan.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/CN1953.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/CN19531.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/CN1Yuan.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/CN5Jiao.jpg http://i235.photobucket.com/albums/ee123/USS656/CN1Jiao.jpg Hope you like! Darryl
Yes - Except for the two - $1000 notes. I picked those up in Hong Kong at the currency exchange. I know HK is part of China but others were all mainland. Thanks - Glad you like them - which one did you like the most? - I like the one from Russia and Mongolia the most.
Thanks Twiggs - Always great to get back to the wife and kids! - LOL - although my wife left on the same day I returned for her own work related trip. That's the way it goes sometimes. Thanks again!
Thanks - There is something about that note that is really appealing, when I saw it I knew I would get it. Some reallllllllly old Chinese notes I had to pass on were the same way except the guy wanted between $120 to $170 US for each one. Much more than I was willing to spend even for perfect examples of the first versions of the RMB. I also like the 10 Peso note (looks and feels like it just came off the press - lol - lets hope it didn't) and the 5 Jiao note.
Those are great notes, glad you enjoyed China, my last trip there was in early 2005, and based on the construction I saw in Beijing and Shanghai, it probably already looks different. That Mongolian note is awesome!
I agree on the note! I did not make it to Shanghai but some of my co-workers did. They said the sky-line has almost completely changed just in the last year. The smog and traffic in Beijing was unbelievable! (for no amount of money would I live in Beijing) Beijing is so big it's hard to notice the change in size. It's like LA - the city just goes on forever. In Shenzhen though tons of new buildings were built in the last two years. They have a drive through McDonald's now which is quite a change for that area (of 13 Million people) - how funny is that.?. Thanks Darryl
now THOSE are the types of notes i WISH were sold in lots on Ebay ... guess the markup just wouldnt be in the 1000% for there profits if they did .... i need to travel over seas gorgeuous notes!!!!
Those are some great notes. I really liked the notes from Hong Kong. Glad your trip was successful. Thanks for sharing the pics.
