Here is a better photo: AV Pagoda 3.79g./35mm struck circa 1010-40AD Eastern Chalukyas Kulottunga I obv. Telegu-Kanarese punchmarks/ Central punchmark=Lion rev. Incuse punchmarks unknown mint EX: Adams collection (CNG/Triton)
The John Q Adams collection I take it. That is an interesting and different piece for sure and way out of my collection sphere.
I have no idea where you manage to find such amazing gold coins, but well done yet again. Those punch mark designs look great. You have to hand it to the Indians, they sure came up with some interesting designs for their coins. I'm trying to get into this area too. You saw the Bactrian coin I bought the other day. Unfortunately I'll probably have to settle for the silver versions of these coins. Still, there are a lot of interesting ancient/medieval coins in silver from that region of the world, so it's all good. I'll just live vicariously through your posts of these golden beauties while I focus on the silver.
Thanks for all very nice comments. I was "lucky" to have gotten it, one of my coin buddies who attended the Triton auction in person told me this.... Most of the audience was still on "lunch break", so I got this rare coin for the starting price, unlike the the Mughal "zodiac" AV Mohurs which some went more then ten times estimate! These Eastern Chaluykas AV Pagodas are extremely rare, unless of course they find a hoard of them in future. So far only 50 are known of all types/rulers! Now I am off to work, to pay for recent auction wins! John
Another coin that is high on my want list . Outstanding coin with an equally outstanding pedigree! Congrats!
