Here is my neat AV 1/2 Dukat Klippe ND 1.74g. Regensburg (Imperial City) Holy Roman Emperor Josef II 1765-90 obv. Crossed Keys of Bishopric rev. Imperial Double Headed Eagle
Mat...Klippe coinage were often minted in the German States/Holy Roman Empire. I have some from Nuremberg too. Regensburg struck massive AV 30 Dukaten 105g. down to the tiny 1/32 Dukat 0.08g. I got a bid on a FDC Regensburg "City View" 1/2 Dukat...gorgeous coin.
I like klippes. Have only had a few silver ones; never a gold one. That's a great piece, of course. ("Dead Bug Guy does it again!" LOL)
Me too! I find Klippes are fascinating! No dead bugs...I had to trim 3 cedar hedges to afford it These were minted in relatively small numbers back circa 1750's. Good news is that most surviving coins are mint state.
It's a humble thing next to your goldie, O Mighty Dead Bug Guy, but here's a 1650 Nuremberg silver ducat klippe I once had on my Holey Coin Vest (of avatar fame). Loved it. Loved the little boy prancing on his stick horse. Such a fun design. Looked great on my vest, too.
NEAT COIN!!!!! Being German/ I can relate to these fascinating coins. German States is almost 1/5 of Friedbergs "Gold Coinage of the World" book. I guess they always liked AV money....like me Only problem, everything Germany minted after Kaiser Wilhelm II abdication in 1918 thru present day is drab and boring. The hayday was in the Baroque period 1600-1750.
found your coin in my 2002 Krause catalog. German States/Regensburg weight-1.7500 grams, .986 gold that's a very high purity gold coin. . I can't get over how great the grade is on this coin. amazing coin.
So do we all, I'd imagine, but not all of us can afford to. But if you can, you should! Which is not to suggest that I mind circulated coins. I don't. In some series like USA Morgan dollars, I actually prefer well toned circulated coins to Mint State ones! But in most cases, the "higher grade is better" rule applies, of course.
