Thanks for all your help along the way !!!!!! Doug, why does the KM list the coin as a 1/2 Souverain d' Or but all the european dealers and Eypeltauer list it as a Souverain d' Or. KM list the larger type as a Souverain d'Or and Eypeltauer list it as a 2 Souverain d'or. What's up??
One of these days you gotta get Freidberg. It's semantics - there really is no such thing as a half sovereign d'or - only a sovereign d'or and a 2 sovereign d'or. But sometimes folks call the 1 a half and the two a 1. Not all of the mints struck the coins in the same denominations for the same dates. This one is a Brabant, Antwerp as evidenced by the hand mint mark. Krause doesn't list it correctly, Friedberg does. Brabant issued only the 1 sovereign d'or in 1753. You can tell by the weight, the 1 is 5.53 grams - the 2 is 11.06 grams. So go by the weight and call it what you will - there's really only the two denominations, not 3.
Just recieved this coin back from NGC BB..............Genuine but Bent!!!!!! As thin as this coin and being that is over 250 years old how can NGC not allow for some bend or wrinkle in its grading .:rolling:
I don't know for sure that NGC has a set rule on this, but in many cases a coin that has been bent will be slabbed. In other cases it will not be as the bend is considered to be damage. From what I have seen the defining point seems to be the age of the coin and the method used to strike it. I just don't know where that point is - where they draw the line you might say. But apparently this coin is on the wrong side of that line.
To protect the value of my investment in this coin should I try sending it to PCGS, ANACS, or ICG or should I just send it to NCS and get in authenticated and encapsulated? Of course I could just put it in a airtite holder and do nothing I really would like to get it in a slab for preservation and presentation purposes. Any suggestions?
If the coin is bent the pics certainly don't show any indication of it - so it's hard to say what another TPG might do. But NGC's action is certainly an indication. If you really want it slabbed I'd probably go with NCS.
