If you collect 18th century Austrian coins from the reign of Charles VI, than think about adding a few 1/4 Thalers to your collection. Most collectors don't know that the survival rate on 1/4 Thalers are lower than you might think. You can find high grade 1/3rd and 2/3rd Thalers more than you can find 1/4 Thalers. XF grades and AU's are no problem to find, but if you see an MS grade you should buy it. If we take the 1725 1/4 Thaler with a mintage of 11,000 you're only looking at $400 in MS 61, and the same goes for the 1734 with a mintage of 27,000. I've seen maybe eight MS graded pieces of the 1734 and a few AU's, but VF's and XF's are not uncommon. My favorite is the 1740 with a mintage of 42,000 and out of that 42,000 you need to know that there is the 1740/1 over date. The over date is the key as there are no other known over dates. I find it funny that you can buy an MS62 for under $400 and the same for the non over date 1740.
