Hi, I was wondering if you could tell me anything more about what this medal or coin i have. (pictures are attached) On the front it says "Wien" which is german for Vienna and shows St. Stephen's Cathedral and a ferris wheel. On the back is a Austrian coat of arms with "AUSTRIA" written under it. Thanks for the help! Alan
Wien means Vienna...it is not any variety of coin or medal I have ever seen...I think, like said above, its just a keychain on can buy in Vienna.
Yup. Primarily intended for the English-speaking. "Austria" is the giveaway, if one is needed. Osterreich is the country name in its own language.
Then again, "Austria" is also the Latin(ized) country name in Latin. And that (pronounced ow-stria, with an ow as in English "how" ) is fairly frequently used there. They have an A on the license plates, and AT is the ISO code and used as the country's Internet TLD. The church is St. Stephen's Cathedral indeed, the man on the horse is probably Prince Eugene of Savoy, and the Ferris wheel is the famous old one in the Prater park. Note that the Austrian coat of arms is different from the one depicted on this medallion. This one was in use until 1915 or so. But the piece may very well be newer than that ... Christian
