AUSTRIA 1919 FIFTY HELLER KASSENCHEIN NOTGELD NOTE

A beautiful near Uncirculated (a slight single centre crease) Fifty Heller Kassenschein Notgeld Note issued in 1919.

Notgeld translated, German for "emergency money" or "necessity money" was special money issued primarily in Germany and Austria issued to deal with the economic crisis situation between the first and second world wars which resulted in a shortage of small change. It was not issued by the central bank, Reichsbank, but by various other institutions such as town savings banks, municipalities, private and state-owned firms. It was therefore not legal tender, but rather a mutually-accepted means of payment in a particular locale or site.
