I recently inherited a large coin collection, amongst which was 13 Australain gold Sovereigns. I have attempted to grade and value them and i think theyre arround Aus$200 each, with some worth quite a bit more. I've taken photos of the coins on both sides. Anyone help me in valuing them?
You should take them to a coin dealer and ask for a rough estimate. Don't be upset when the dealer says that he will only pay bullion value for 1/3 of them, although I do see some nice ones there. Usually dealers would pay only 80% of the actual value, so you can have a rough idea how much it's worth. Nice find there!
Not all of these coins are Australian. Most of these are,in fact,British. The Australian ones have a mintmark - M,P,or S located on the ground line below the horse's hoof on the St George ones,& located below the shield on the Shield ones.At least one of these coins has a number. This is actually a die number that was employed as part of an experiment between 1864 & 1879 to test the longevity of the dies,as the Royal Mint on Tower Hill,London was an extremely busy place working 24/7. Some collectors are actually attempting to collect by die numbers as well as by date. This is definitely the case with British 6d.s,1/-s,& 2/-s.I'm not sure about Sovereigns & Half Sovereigns though. What a priceless family heirloom. If at all possible try to keep it complete. If you must part with them sell the whole thing, pouch & coins. Simply geogerous... Take Care B
