I have a liking for Mars types in general and spotted this one. Aurelian Ant. Obv:- IMP C L DOM AVRELIANVS P F AVG, Radiate, cuirassed bust right Rev:- ORIENS AVG, Mars in military dress stg. right, holding long sceptre in left hand, receiving globe from Sol standing left, holding whip in left hand, resting with right foot on a bound captive in oriental dress seated left, head turned right Minted in Serdica (–/–//XXI(•)P(•)). Issue 7, Phase 2. April – November A.D. 274 Reference:- RIC Unlisted. RIC temp #2671.1 corr. (this coin). RIC Temp incorrectly describes as Mars holding spear and doesn't note direction of captives head. http://www.ric.mom.fr/en/coin/2671.1 Same reverse die as RIC temp #2672 http://www.ric.mom.fr/en/coin/2672 Martin
Ditto to the above posts..... and what a gorgeous coin!! Terrific eye-appeal!!! Hmmm, I seem to have a 'liking' for Mars too---must be a 'guy' thing LOL
In't it nice when a standard reference is online format so corrections/additions can be made? If only we had this resource for volume V part 2 and the other 9 volumes!
Awesome Aurelian example, Martin ... Ummm, this is still my only example of this fella (my cool, long-necked version) ... but sadly, I don't have an example with Mars on it (*sigh*) oh, but here is Mars compared to Earth ...
