Hi everyone. Up for auction on eBay I have three medieval Carolingian Frankish silver deniers. All three coins are wonderful pieces of Dark Ages history! https://www.ebay.com/sch/articuno117/m.html?item=185781732860&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m3561.l2562 What makes this particualrly special is that two of them (the Metvllo type) are or more likely than not to be of the great Charlemagne (747-814 AD), based on recent numismatic research by Simon Coupland (please see the auction description for more details on this; for the complete research see Coupland’s study “Attributing the Melle coins of Charlemagne and Charles the Bald”). Although it is not 100% conclusive, I’d say it’s close and that this can still be an appropriate hole-filler for the famous emperor. The other coin (the Bourges type) is likely to be of Charles the Fat, great grandson of Charlemagne and the last ruler of a United Frankish Empire, and overall a rare ruler to obtain. Based on weight and chronology it is more likely to be from him (as opposed to Charles the Bald or a later immobilized type; please see Karl F. Morrison's "Carolingian Coinage" study, under Table XVII). More details are in the auction descriptions, including sizes and weights.
