I have seen several AU graded gold Dollar pieces. Why does NGC sometimes grade not more exactly like AU53 or AU58? Is this a special less expensive grading offer?
The coins reside in a Problem free holder....
What price should I pay for AU graded pieces?
    Thanks...

NGC usually does differentiate AU grades. Are you sure this isn't an AU details grade?

Occasionally, you might find coins graded like this in a bulk submission.......AU, BU, etc. It depends on the submitter's minimum grade requested. For example, if the submitter wanted MS grades as a minimum, they might also request a generic grade (AU) to certify that the coin is genuine.

You can find Morgan dollars graded like this from some of the old hoards.

Yeah, looks like the submitter only wanted to verify authenticity.

I would say this is at the lower end of the AU range. NGC price guide is $285-$300 for AU50 and 53, respectively. That's about what the seller is asking.

It's interesting it says pure gold, since these are only about 90% gold

They are referring to the net calculated pure gold.

For example, a Morgan dollar is 90% silver and contains .77344 oz. of pure silver.
