The disappointment and hurt I feel. OH IT HURTS! (lol)

No, but really. When you get a coin back - a coin you were convinced..even after 2 other professionals with grading experience inspected the coin, that the coin would grade at least MS 60/62 or maybe even higher...you get it back "AU Details (82 Filed Rims)

Mind you, this is my first ever submission because I have always been told grading coins is a "waste" of money. I am starting to think that may be true.

    Anyone else get this grade?

Getting a coin graded should be more for authentication purposes. I have a double struck large cent I bought raw. Sent it to anacs came back as bent details which it was not bent (they sent it back with a newly made scuff on the cheek as well). But I confirmed it was real. Point is, I broke it out of the slab and got it away from the ugly yellow label and I love the coin all the same. At the end of the day it's about the coin not the slab.

Can you post a pic of the coin? I'd like to see it

Was this the peace dollar from your other thread?

To be blunt, first time submissions often result in a wake up call for the individual. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, depending on how one looks at it, but is a reality. With that said though, you certainly approached your first more wisely than many do in that you searched out more experienced opinions, but as you can see, even this doesn't always mean things will pan out. Rims in particular is an area often overlooked by many, including dealers, for what little it may be worth to you now. The best thing to do is view this as a learning experience and take from it what you can instead of focusing on the unfortunate result.

There's also a chance, not a great one though, that the results could change if resubmitted, but I wouldn't get my hopes up at this point in time. Perhaps you could post clear photos of the coin?

So let's see...grading is a waste of money? Well, if the coin had been graded BEFORE you bought it, you would not be sitting on an fraudulently altered, damaged and repaired coin. And what about the next inattentive :bucktooth: professional (?) graders/collectors down the line when it is cracked out and offered as "original?"

Did you bother to place your "gem" on a flat surface to see if it "rocked?" TPGS try very hard to overlook defects on coins to keep the seller and the buyer happy. It's good for business. If they said your coin was "bent," I hope you try to learn how to detect this type of damage in the future. ;)

Wow, very well put! Thank you for that, it actually reassured me quite a bit! I think I may put the coin up for Auction in the near future at maybe Heritage or even eBay.

It is the 1921 $1 High Relief Peace - Tell me what you think...Everyone who has seen it, and inspected it has been taken back for the most part :)

I only have a couple low quality pictures I uploaded from my phone. I am waiting on the True Image Service to be completed.

Yes I did do that. It didn't rock. And if they cared so much they wouldn't have sent the coin back pushed up against the slab where it had left a worn mark on the cheek. They even admitted it and wanted me to send it back so they could put it in a new slab. I told them it wouldn't be necessary and I broke it open.

Now this isn't my thread so I won't talk anymore of it in fairness to the op. ;););)

At the end of the day, although I am a little disappointed, I do see this as a learning experience. I couldn't resist getting my favorite coin graded, but I am starting to see that grading is less about assigning value as it is about authentication as was mentioned earlier.

I still love the Peace Dollars :)

It's both. You are just new to it. When I started out I sent coins to PCGS just to learn how to grade. Boy did I waste money but I hadn't found forums yet. Don't get bummed out. They obviously saw something at the rims to give it the details grade. Some graders are more liberal than others. Don't let it get you down. It is what it is. On to the next :)

Hey! I'm the biggest "problem" on this board; didn't you know this? Don't be saying kind or positive things about me, man.... you'll ruin my rep. ;)

I wouldn't call that a waste of money if you learned from the experience

I'm just wondering if the "filed rims" designation wasn't the result of the coin previously being in a jewelry mount of some sort, and someone tried to repair the rim after removing it.

I say this because two of my 18mm bronze ANA medals that were part of a 3-medal year set had slight damage to the rims which caused them to receive a details grade. I never even noticed this damage until it was pointed out to me, and I examined it under a microscope.

Definitely possible! I am now definitely going to be more aware of this type of damage. I can say for sure, I have overlooked it in the past.

So, if cpm9ball claims to be the biggest, and rates Books as the 2nd biggest, who gets honorable mention?

Reread my comment. I didn't claim to be the biggest, but there are enough cry-babies around here who think I am. This isn't the Olympics. We don't give out bronze medals.
