I have had this Large cent for awhile and I know it isn't the prettiest, but on the Rev. There is something going on in the "O" in USOA. I know the mint was still perfecting the art of minting coins, but to me it looks like the rements of a "S". But I am not a big collector of these coins so I am looking for some answers from some of the experts.also it might have a MPD on the 1 in the date. What do you think?
Ok, I give - what is MPD? The O in question could use a better picture to see what is going on but the rest of your pictures just show damage.
I'm not seeing a misplaced date But what's going on in the O needs the help of @Insider - I'd like to read his thought on this one!
This is an 1849 N11, which is a very common variety, in die state a, with no cuds on the reverse rim, again the most common die state. The thing inside the O is PMD for sure, it's not a product of the minting process. Good eye on the re-punched 1, that is exactly what it is.
Yes the O is just damage, the dash below right of the 1 is the base of another 1 and is diagnostic for N-11. (Unless the die has been discovered to have been paired with another rev since the second edition of Grellman)
It's PMD, this is an early die state of the N-11, there are known later die states that do not show the feature you see inside the O.
