Today I forked over the $100 early bird, which was supposed to begin at 11am. However, since I was there early, I thought I'd ask security at the door and play dumb. They had no clue when the early bird started, so after a few seconds of looking confused they just let me in! At 10am! So I was stoked to get in an extra hour.
Many dealers were already set up and they were all welcoming to me. I found plenty of low to mid grade coins like the eBayers love, but there were also TONS of high end coins, including a few dozen of the new CA gold hoard at Kagin's booth.
When 1pm rolled around, I expected a big crowd to come in, but... (crickets). Today was poorly attended. A few dealers seemed hopeful that Friday would be better, when the weather warmed up (it was 25° this morning!)
I spent 5k today! Shopped for 8 straight hours. No bathroom breaks, no food. I couldn't stop myself. I was like an addict going on a bender, haha! Among my buys, I cherry picked an 1864 small motto 2 cent for $10, an 1877-S doubled die reverse trade dollar for $210, a VERY nice 1878-s doubled die reverse trade dollar for $220, and an XF detail 2 cent with reverse clashed with Indian head cent for $18. My other big buys were a 1799 VG-Fine draped bust dollar for $1000, 1876 NGC AU50 20 cent piece (old holder, rainbow toning) for $475, &1834 NGC MS61 capped bust half with tremendous flash for $1000. Here's a pic.

Nice job slipping in early! Looks like you got your money's worth.
I'm wondering if I could save up (aka not buy any coins) for several months just to have a nice wad of cash to spend at a large show like that. While it would probably be worth it, I can't seem to stop purchasing coins for long enough to save that kind of money.

It's something to me! Always afraid of making a bad purchase. Always trying to learn and be careful about what I spend my money on.

That has to be alot of pressure. You have to buy a lot of coins to make it worth your while, but you cant make any bad buys or your trip could be wasted.

I am the same way. I just blame it on the internet. back in the 70's and 80's when I was actively collecting coins there was no internet and it was possible to save 2 - 3 grand to go to the Long Beach show with.

None of it is for sale yet. They're just building the anticipation.

How many coins were they displaying? What coins were on display? My understanding is that Kagin is reaching out privately to the collector world to sell the truly high end Double Eagles. IMO, Kagin should have worked with either Heritage or Legend Morphy to auction off the real high end coins rather than trying to sell them through his network. I would think the prices achieved via auction would be much higher.

  21. Nicely done. Hope you are able to turn these around for a big profit. Not sure I could go 8 hours without eating or a bathroom break. Enjoy the show, TC
