Hi, I was wondering if any of you guys know the rarity or design of this athens owl? I know there are many different designs of these coins, does anyone recognize this one? It seems to have fabulous detail and eye appeal, and is a true beauty! I think it is qenuine... Anyone thoughts?

Very nice coin! Lots of detail. Looks like a high relief coin. I'm sure someone will be able to tell you exactly what you have. The people here are great!

It is a modern fake of an Athenian tetradrachm issued circa 454-404 BC.

I would agree. How I know offhand is the face is not right, and the owl is in the wrong position.

This was the most famous coin in antiquity. They have been reproduced for a long time, but I will say this one looks like a higher quality replica. Not high enough to fool Bill's eyes, but still. :)

    This one scares me....
First, it is a commonly counterfeited ancient.
Second, it has a weird look in the eye.
Third, I see what looks to be cast marks/ Porosity

    Better picts would be great...

However, if it is real, this is an expensive coin.

This coin belongs to an older friend of mine, he said he purchased it probably about 50 years ago.
