I had searched about $35 worth of pennies over the last few days. I was coming up empty handed, except for some AU eary 70s pennies. I was almost done, last few dollars or so, when I came to this one. I had bought the official Redbook this Saturday, and quickly turned to the page with the pic if the 97 doubled ear. I was shocked. The penny I had just found, matched perfectly. Does anyone know how many of these were produced?
I think what you are seeing there is a hit that flattened out the earlobe. The photos aren't sharp enough, but it doesn't look like the DDO-001 to me.
Armando, It appears that this is a matter of opinion. According to sources, "doubling on the ear gives the impression of a second earlobe".To me, your coin looks like the doubled ear variety, I sure hope you keep this coin in a special marked holder until you get it varified. Dave
here is a better reference : http://www.coppercoins.com/lincoln/diestate.php?date=1997&die_id=1997p1do001&die_state=mds I do not think it is either, due to the flat appearance of the secondary area. The other markers are not easily visible/missing due to the photos, so those are not considered, but you probably can see them better with the loupe.
Sorry, but I do not think its a perfect match. http://www.lincolncentresource.com/doubledies/1997ddo.html
Thank you Dave. I have it in a hard plastic penny holder. I know it's hard to make a decision based off photos. I'm definetly not getting rid of this coin. I did take more pictures, hopefully it will help. Again thank you.
I would like to thank everyone for their help and advice. I did take more pictures. Hopefully they will help. I know it doesn't match coppercoins or other websites but could it be a variety? I did find markings in the R on the reverse and found some light marks between the D and W obverse. I will spend the few bucks and cross my fingers to get it checked out. I know that pictures aren't the best but hopefully you'll see something, if you know what you're looking for.
I do see yours clearly. Mine, doesn't appear to have the minor doubling going up the ear though. It's going to take me sending it in to get a yes or no though. Yours is a dead give away. Nice coin!
Armando, before you spend the extra bucks, most of these guys on CT know what they are talking about. The problem lies with the pictures of your coin which makes it difficult to judge what you have for sure. Why don't you take it in hand to a coin shop and get an opinion from them ? Than make your decision based on their findings. Dave
I can do that. I'll take it this weekend and see what they think. If it's not, it was still fun talking about it. I know I still have a lot to learn and hopefully everyone can be patient with a newbie
Right on Armando. If you don't ask questions you may never know the answers. Welcome aboard as a "newbie". Dave
Sending it in can be cheaper, in some cases, than putting up with the nonsensicle blather that the typical coin shop will spew out. I recall going to a coin shop in 2006 that had absolutely no idea what a Type 2 1972 Eisenhower Dollar was. I've talked with another fella that had a coin shop here in Auburn that swore up and down that his machine doubled 1970-S Lincoln was a doubled die! Since then, I just avoid Coin Shops for opinions on coin varieties since if it isn't a 55/55, they would have no clue on exactly what it was and, truth be told, these Doubled Ear coins are more or less a "specialty" type for modern variety collectors and the market is extremely thin on them. If you have trouble with that statement then I've got a roll of DDO-033 Minnesota Extra Tree quarters I'd like to sell ya. My advice for the OP is to contact Wexler and arrange to send the coin in. That way, he'll have an unbiased professional opinion on what his coin really is.
My opinion is that it's not the doubled ear either. If you send it in though, let us know the results. BTW here's mine.
I would like to thank everyone for their replies. I will more than likely send it in to Wexler. A few extra bucks is ok. Heck, I spent close to $90 to PSA for them to tell me my Ty Cobb card wasn't authentic. That's after a reputable dealer said he was 95% positive that the card was authentic. Sometimes it good to pay the little extra to get the right call. If it is or not, I will surely post the results. On another note, I did come across, I think it's 2000 cent, that appears to have the same look on this 97. So, it's more than likely a MD. But I'll send it in none the less. I'm learning a lot but conversing with everyone on this forum. Excited to learn more from you all.
