What do you think about the at-home approval service by any coin company (like Littleton)?
(Oh, by the way, never order anything from a coin shop in West Islip, NY. They give you a a free coin (I think) and then they send you meaningless junk and they won't stop until you buy one. Then, they'll wait a month and send you more junk.)

If you want to have someone else decide what coins you should look at, and don't mind paying over the market price, it's a wonderful service.
Since there may very well be more than one coin shop in that city, this is painting with a pretty broad brush.

BTW I don't know about other states, but in California unsolicited merchandise is a gift, by law. Once you notify someplace that is sending you stuff "on approval" that you don't want anymore, if they keep sending they're being very generous. :D

    It's not very big...or historic.
That's probably the only one there.

And, I meant to ask, If you are a half-hour from a decent coin store and at-home approval is your only option, who would you reccomend?

Half and hour is well worth it....I know some people that drive more than that just to go to a shop.
Also the internet is another great tool for the ones who can't drive that much.

There are many internet sites selling coins. Many of them have very good photos of the actual coin you will buy so you can examine the condition. To me, this is far superior than having random coins just showing up in the mailbox. It's even better than visits to many coin shops.

Littleton advertised a silver eagle at shipping cost(3$), greed got he better of me so i sent for it,big mistake..
To begin with it took about 3 months for them to send it,then they started sending me the aprroval junk
(a crappy IKE,a couple VF Franklins) at inflated prices, when i returned the coins i instructed them not to send any more.
About three months later another shipment of junk arrived in the mail, plus they had already charged my master card ,Now i'm angry so i called their 800# and told them to stop.
Big hassle for a 3$ silver eagle, lesson learned "there's no free lunch"
Plus if you look at Littletons catolog their prices are almost as bad as TV's Coin Vault.
    I wouldn't recomend them..

I think the point everyone is making is that "approval services" are just not a good way to go. :)

Yeah, when you can drive. Parents don't take you anywhere.
    One more year...come on!

You must be my age ;)
Sure parents do...but sometimes you have to work up to get to go somewhere....wash the dishes...help clean the house...you get my point :D

...and have enough money in the first place do get something decent (kidding).
I do need a little bit more especially because I'm starting with Peace Dollars and whatever else I can get my hand on, but mainly Peace Dollars. I also need to "save up" anyway, but for what, I ask them...

By the way, Speedy, I used your sig to convince my friends that coin collecting was cool. It worked...on almost all of them. But there goes my other friend blabbering away "I got a 1776-1976 silver proof set and so did everyone in my family from Germany for $1 a piece.":headbang:
