My recent submission to NGC for a ''variety evaluation'' on my raw 1878 Cc Morgan silver dollar was b/c the 'C' on the left is noticeably larger than the 'c' on the right (Cc). It came back "AU 53" with the following note: ''has not been attributed for the following reason: not top 100, hot 50 or hitlist 40''. What does this mean?? That the coin does not fit into any previously created category (and therefore a rare one-of-a-kind !!) or is it so common that a separate category is not warranted? Thanks in advance.

NGC does not attribute all VAM's. If it doesn't fall into one of the categories mentioned, then you would have been better off submitting it to ANACS which attributes all VAM's.

Can you post a good close-up of the mintmark on your 78-CC? I've never seen a "Big C/Little c" before.

Here's pics of each of the known mint marks. Each C was individually punched into Each die so spacing and slight tilts between the two can make it look like the right C is smaller but it's only an optical illusion.

Yes, please post a photo. Since the mint mark was applied by a separate punch on the die, initial suspicion would be a damaged mint mark punch, or pmd on the coin, but photos might chnage that. Jim
