Hey Cointalkers, particularly shield nickel experts- So, a little random, I bought this coin off of eBay from an ad without a photo selling an "uncirculated" 1883 shield nickel, so I buy it at a pretty low price (I know, crazy, but I knew it was crazy) and got it today and it does look pretty nice to the naked eye, all though the reverse looks cleaned/hairlined (no shocker there). But then I think, "something's going on with this date here"- not expecting any miracles- but I zoom in, and this is at least highly suspicious. It looks to me like theres a little something above the 3, definitely something in the inner loop, a filled 8... Major die crack on "IN." Am I looking at anything here guys? Any help is much appreciated. Russ (Cannoncoins)
It does not match any of the five known 83/2 overdate varieites. An excellent online reference to help you identify that variety can be found here. http://www.shieldnickels.net/1883_2/1883_2.html
