I picked up this today with the other coins I have posted in New Acquisitions. To save me trawling through Krause, can anyone tel me where it comes from? I can't decipher any of the writing to help me with a search. Weighs 3.6g and measures about 17mm diameter. It appears to be Silver. Thanks!
Well, the Arabic side looks like it says Kashmir in the middle. But why would there be Chinese characters on the other side? Is there an area in the Himalayas in the region around Kashmir which is on the Chinese border? I don't know of one offhand.
This is on wikipedia and may be pertinent: Arabic cash coins of Rashidin Khan Khoja[edit] During the Dungan revolt from 1862 to 1877, Sultan Rashidin Khan Khoja proclaimed a Jihad against the Qing dynasty in 1862, and captured large cities in the Tarim Basin. He issued Chinese-style cash coins minted at the Aksu, and Kucha mints with exclusive Arabic inscriptions, these coins were only briefly minted as Rashidin Khan Khoja would be betrayed and murdered by Yakub beg in 1867.[98]
Sinkiang, Miscal Kashgar 1310AH, 1892AD Looking for the type in KM, but this one is a little odd. I'll keep looking. The character at the three o'clock position is not the usual. I always keep my eye on these and the one miscal denomination seems to be the hardest one to find. The 2,3 & 5 miscals are fairly common depending on the dates and mints. Edit; Found it in Xinjiang Numismatics, #365. Guangxu yinyaun, 1 mace (miscal), with "Kashgar-made" in Uygur on the reverse. Noted as a "**" coin, ** = "rare". It looks like it is in KM as Y#16 or Y#D16 (6th edition, 2009) Congrats, I have been looking for a 1 miscal for years with little luck.
