I was just attributing a couple of coins that I have had for a couple of weeks. One is a Commodus AE as Augustus with a IVVENTVS reverse. It's a bare head right and has a weight of 13.01 grams. I determined that it was a dupondius based on the weight of other AE''s from that approximate time period. My references are growing but incomplete. Is there a reference that would give me more knowledge in this area?
Photos make this place way more fun ... lets see your coins Oh, and I always go to old examples to find out if a target-coin seems like it's in the correct coin-zone ... Here is a random CNG-link, which will show you a whole s-load of examples ... this baby is random Commodus Dupondius examples ... https://cngcoins.com/Search.aspx?PAGE_NUM=&PAGE=1&TABS_TYPE=2&CONTAINER_TYPE_ID=1&IS_ADVANCED=1&ITEM_DESC=commodus ae dupondius&ITEM_IS_SOLD=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_1=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_3=1&SEARCH_IN_CONTAINER_TYPE_ID_2=1
Steve, I'm certainly well into the weight range of a dupondius. I will try to get a picture in a little while. I always like pictures too. I was also interested in a reference, maybe about the coins weights and fineness based on the roman economy at various times.
Oh well ... sadly, that's all I've got, my coin-friend (good luck in your coin sleuthing => I'm sure the troops will roll-in soon enough)
Steve, I very much appreciate the information. Maybe I have too much time on my hands since I retired.
I don't recall a Commodus Augustus dupondius with bare head. I'll be interested in seeing a photo. My dupondius weighs a couple grams less than my heaviest as and a little less than the lighter ones. A thought: Does your coin by chance have the legend with AVG followed by FIL? If so, the coin is as Caesar since AVG FIL means 'son of the Augustus'. To separate them, you need to see metal color. Even BMC does not separate them.
Doug, The legend is indeed AVG FEL. It's difficult to get a very good picture with my current setup but and it's hard to see the complete legend in hand but it reads: L AVREL COMMODES CAES AVG FIL GERM PRINC (IVVENT) S C Weight is 13.01 grams and the second 2 photos represent the color pretty well.
That is either an As or Dupondius. RIC Marcus Aurelius 1522 (bust not draped); BMCRE 1522; RCV (Sear) 5562; Cohen 611. By weight probably a dupondius.
I tentatively attributed as Sear 5562 as well. I am building my reference collection and plan to get the volume of RIC that covers adoptives. I have one volume on its way and it's not this one.
