    Heat.

Either in an oven as dsmith stated, or by use of open flame, either way, heat.

Some artificial toners have their skill fine tuned enough to create the right rainbow affect on a coin's surface.

From what I hear, PCGS will identify a coin as artificially toned even if it isn't.

    I hear the same thing.

From people who artificially tone coins!

Like the others mentioned, they have been cooked! PCGS will not slab a coin, even if it doesn't have chemicals. They would slab it as "questionable color". Although, they no longer put that on the slab anymore. It would be "Genuine" and the slab number would indicate the reason of questionable color.

The fact the seller brought out "no chemicals" is a red flag by itself. Like how would you know chemicals produce artificial toning?

The mentioning of No Chemicals is a dead giveaway its AT. Also if you look at his other auctions you will notice he has other coins toned exactly the same way. Its not impossible but it looks suspicious.

I wonder if we could make any headway with an eBay false-advertising complaint, on the grounds that oxygen (from the air in the oven) most certainly IS a chemical? :)

Yep, and the propane in a propane torch is a chemical too.

The guy obviously doesn't know what he's talking about - he calls the coin an Unc Proof Set coin. There are Unc sets and there are Proof sets - 2 different things.

Either way, there is no way to distinguish AT from NT. All you can do is guess. But I do agree, given all of the other coins this guy is selling, the odds are good this is AT. But that's still a guess. We don't really know.

So you don't believe that circulated proofs exist? :)

Appears on all of his listings.

    Pretty generic.

Pretty rare that he would have so many rainbow toned coins.

    Deduction: He's artificially toning them.

Every single one of his coins has been altered.....disgusting IMO. He's an example of why I never came out with VERDI-TONE.

I love the toning on this quarter offered up by the same seller... it looks so... so... natural.

Right and he has two of these toned exactly the same way. I wonder if it was baked in the same batch?
