Artificial Toning or Natural Toning?

Based on my very limited knowledge of toned coins, I would say this coin is AT. The color distribution appears too uniform. The sea-greens are too dark, and on the reverse has quite a bit of golden toning which is indicative of baking. I think the coin is beautiful, but it may be a deal killer if this is AT. I hope I'm wrong.

Can members more experienced in silver toned coins provide their opinions?

It may be AT, though it looks like a few I have that have album toning from the old Whitman blue folders. Tough call.

I was actually looking yesterday online about coin toning. There are alot of scammers on ebay selling "toned" coins for a nice price. They are obvioulsy artificially toned, yet people are buying them. Anyway here is a coin that is admitted to be artificially toned. Looks just like the one you posted. I will post a link to a great article about how to tell the difference between NT and AT, when I get home. I bookmarked there, and cant seem to find it now at work.

Wow, the background (the cloth) looks the same as the image you showed! weird!

Actually the colors dont look like yours. I am not saying either way that the one you showed is AT.

Really? Cool. I am hopeful that I'm wrong. Because I really like it.

Doh! That's gotta be the same seller. He does say "Artistically Toned". I just ASSumed that he meant artistically toned by nature. :rolling: Ah bummer...it really had great eye appeal.

Well im glad you were able to determine its AT before purchasing it.
Grab one of your old low grade silver coins, biol an egg, then crush the egg in a bag with the silver coin. Bam! In two hours you have a beautifully toned coin, lol.

I'd vote for AT. Regardless, it's not MA (Market Acceptable as defined by NGC/PCGS), IMO.

@Mike, Which coin? This thread is 15 months old.

@Owle, regarding the half dime, the price and the holder bother me more than the toning.

The background mentioned in the two pics provided by Louie Two Bits and gbroke is a gloved hand holding the coin.
