I'm going to have the opportunity to purchase a few Uncirculated Franklin halves. However they are toned and this is not an area I'm familiar with. Can someone provide me with some knowledge and perhaps examples of artificial and natural toning on franklin halves?

    Thanks.

We could post a book about it and it wouldn't make any difference. Two reasons for that, 1 - pictures don't tell you/show you what one needs to know. 2 - to learn what one needs to know requires in hand experience, a lot of it. But I'll give a couple pointers - whatever man can do, mother nature has already done. Nobody, and I mean nobody, can definitively say that toning is AT or NT.

I disagree. If people showed me pictures of both AT and NT Franklin Halves, it doesn't matter If I get it right the first time. You will begin to realize a color pattern that is acceptable and legitimate on every single one. This pattern can be extremely useful to detect authentically toned coins. I do agree that it requires a lot of in-hand experience as well. And I also disagree when you say nobody can definitely say that toning is AT or NT because some color schemes don't ever match up, unless exposed to AT conditions.

There is a difference between the original question :"Can someone provide me with some knowledge and perhaps examples of artificial and natural toning on franklin halves?" and your "acceptable and legitimate". Doug is correct in that chemically altering the surface of a coin is just that. There is no difference in composition if done correctly and located expertly. Purposely altered AT coins will appear the same as NT. Now comes the part~ what if it is not done exactly right. Then that is the shady area people usually call " market acceptable" where the coin is close enough that the grader can't tell if it is AT or NT, so they use their own policy as which category to put on the coin label. There are plenty of AT coins hiding as NT in slabs, and many long time collectors who had a white coin tone over 30 years in their possession that was labeled as other than NT.

just by looking at 1,000's coins helps. there some obvious AT ones.

To prove my point, I brought this example that I am sure is AT.

Based upon deductive reasoning, I can come upon the obvious conclusion that it is completely unnatural as well as the seller having a bad rep for AT, and the very low bid of an actual toned specimen with a rainbow like that.

this is done artificially by electricity. my AT dime is much the same as this...

AT electronically done. this dime cost me $40 on Ebay. lesson learned. I should have known better.

Except that AT can take on many different appearances. Are there coins that are easier to tell if they are artificially toned? Sure. But if the artificial toning on a coin is good enough, there really would be no way to tell if it was AT or NT.

The best advise I have is this. DO NOT buy any toned coins raw if you can't tell the difference between at and nt. PERIOD!

Even when the coin costs 10 % of melt, or it is a key date?
    Sheesh.

the franklins aren't monster toned. Just some red under the franklin bust and on the bottom of the bell.

That depends. Are we talking about josh or anyone else?

And where are you buying Unc toned franklins for 10% of melt? China?

Actually, a lot less. I usually get it for face at my bank, every time I have found circulated Franklin at my bank I got them in large amounts of 5,000-50,000 pieces. Also for morgans, every time that I have gotten circulated morgans (and uncirculated too) morgan dollars I can get as little as 500 to sometimes as much as 10,000.

how are you able to get 50,000 franklin half dollars at your bank? for FV?
or perhaps your use of language is making this more confusing than it should.

I think you had better restate this or put up some evidence.. untruths are considered spam and starting flame wars. It is rather unbelievable in this century.

Aha, you got me there. Keep in mind I say every time I have ever found Franklin halves and Morgan dollars in circulation, I get x to y amount. But I have never found either Franklin Halves or Morgan Dollars in circulation, so :D:D:D
Do you want proof for that @desertgem
    Trust me, I'm not lying...
