Grandson going on a school (NC St.) trip to Argentina. He is a novice collector of US. Is there anything that might be of local numismatic intertest in country?
All I know about La Argentina is that there is a region there called Patagonia which I would one day love to visit and explore.......
I'm guessing he will be in Buenos Aires? I visited in 2009 for 2 weeks and it's an amazing city. When he gets there he can google coin shops near me or Monedas en Buenos Aires Here are 3 listings that I found.. There should be more shops.
There are no coin shops there though.. Only mountains, desert, ice and penguins And you don't use the word La.. It's just Argentina in English and Spanish
I think these are pretty cool and not expensive in circulated grade If there aren’t coin shops then maybe antique shops
There are coin shops. I visited one of them on my trip to Buenos Aires. The city has everything from Starbucks, McDonalds and KFC as seen in the map I provided
I started typing before your response, then got distracted for a bit before I hit “Post Reply” and ended up after you.
Hope he has fun and finds it educational, coins or no coins. Seeing how other people live and the basics of another country, is a life education you can only get through travel.
Thanks for your replies. I will post when he gets home next week. He did go to Patagonia one weekend.
I lived in Uruguay for 2 years. I was a missionary for our church and made friends all through the country. Part of Argentina was in the area that we worked. This was many years ago1966 to 1968. I collected coins but not like we collect them now. We had a member of our church and he gave us help several times. The exchange rate was going up and down. Our parents would send each of us about $90 a month. I had my collection of coins until 1996 when my wife kicked me out of the house. I don't know what she did with them, but I did save some currency from Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay. I've kept them in my journal. I check with a currency collector and was told they were worth much. The currency that I collected from Uruguay are in a sealed sheet protector. I have about 30 ten peso notes in serial number order, not that they're worth much.
I did a day trip (Ferry) from Buenos Aires to Colonia de Sacramento, Uruguay. It was a neat little city. Great seafood!
