i don't see it that way. because that's your collections and your life. you might say that in the future all those is for you. but right now is not at all. you might see some that i don't like it or less valueble. that's it. you are afraid they might just hold it, touch it, sell it, and play with it. thus decreasing the value of that coin. right?. give your side. i might not correct. thanks.

Well anchor, I'm not sure what your solution is.

Are you suggesting that we put some kind if thermite bomb in the safe, so that if the spouse or kids open it after we're gone the whole collection will disappear in a smoky blaze?

My own take is to leave clear instructions on how to get the collection appraised so that if one of the kids wants it, the other can get something of comparable value before the big split; or it can be sold for a fair price so everyone can split the proceeds.

I educate my wife and kids so they know what to do and not to do. I have just taken my 5 year old to her first coin show to start her collection and My older daughter has private coin shows (show and tell) with her friends to show off her collection. With this exposure at an early age I hope my collection will be just fine. I always try to involve them on every level

Im only 13 years old and havn't inherited a collection, but I have inhearited a couple of cons and I can tell you some kids my age can't grasp the IDea of playing $100 for as 10 cents etc... but there are some kids who can seriously collect, They just need to be educated and taught from a young age but I think many kids eventually will be able to mature, but anyway, I think If you are going to pass on a collection it means more to the relative If you give it to them before you are deceased because then they can learn to apprecait them from you and you can get them off to a good start in coin collecting.

youngcollector -- I have to admit that I still have trouble with the idea of paying $100 for a dime too. However, I agree that a collection should be passed on to the next generation while the collector is still alive to answer questions and help sort things out. The tighter and longer you hold onto your collection, the more certain it is that it will eventually be lost. This is one of those paradox's of life, that to keep something you must give it away.

my daughter is not interested in coins. instead she is thinking of e-bay. that's means she is going to sell everything at e-bay in case i give it to her.

My Bro-in-law still can grasp that I spent $125 for a cent...then the other day they found out that my S VDB cost over $700--they almost died!!!

I have showed my S VDB to a few guys I know...policeman...and a guy that deals in millions every year...and they couldn't see HOW a cent could be worth so much...or who would buy it...thankfuly they don't call me crazy and such...but tell me to keep up the good work and to let them know how it goes!

That is the same thing they tell people when they expect someone from the "funny farm" to come and take them away. Have you noticed them roll their eyes when they say this?

    I have!

My two oldest kids love my coins and we share the pleasure. I hope when the time comes that I'm no longer breathing one or both or the youngest, etc of them would want to keep the coins in the family as a keepsake and perhaps share it with their kids, etc.

I like your style Speedy, Collecting quality over quantity at such a young age.
Keep this up and think of the wonderful collection you will have when you have kids yourself.

Thats what you should think at your age and that is what most of us thought at one time or another. Stuff changes, Stuff happens

    Enjoy the trip :)

If you want to make it to 45 without any break in your collecting, then that is probably the only way to do that. Women WILL find ways of preventing your collecting, even if it is only temporary. ;)

What makes you think it's going to be your choice? Some girl is likely to come along eventually and decide for you.

Enjoy the trip is like saying I hope you have a good fall ;)....and I may fall down that way someday but right now I don't think so ;)

That is when us guys have to have a strong will and be the HEAD of the house---

All I can say to that is...I don't think so...but as TCT pointed out on another thread...I've been wrong before...
I do know a guy (by email) that found a girl that is a collector of coins...so he decided not to wait around till someone else found her ;)

    There are few...lady collectors.

Alright...back to coins....as for the topic...it doesn't make any hoot to me what happens to my coins after I'm gone...I won't know what will happen to them---but I would hope that they would either go to a collector or be sold and the $$ to my family.

I wasn't insinuating that a woman would strongarm you into not collecting, I was saying that your priorities might change when she has your first child and you realize that she won't be working for a little while and your total household expenses just doubled at the same time that your family income was halved. When the choice becomes "should I add another nice coin to my collection or should I feed my wife and child" that choice is an easy one to make, and you won't be buying that coin for a while. That is why I said what I said about remaining a bachelor being the best way to be able to keep collecting strait through.

Back to the OP, I also don't care what happens to my collection when I die. That said, I care deeply for the people who might benefeit from the liquidation of my (rather modest) collection, so I've left instructions with my wife on how to maximize the collection's sale value. I'm like you Spencer, my Dad is a collector (and the reason that I am a collector) so he will be the one to actually do the selling if I predecease him. Once he dies I will have to update my plan, but until then it's taken care of.

On the other hand some of us prove to be right.

< That is when us guys have to have a strong will and be the HEAD of the house--->

Uh, if you think THAT is possible, you'd better stay single.

< when she has your first child >

    Heaven forbid.

I'll cross the road when I get to it... ;)

My dad is also a collector/invester...I'm not sure if he is the reason I have collected but he has sure helped $$....
