Do you consider yourself a FORCE within the hobby? Perhaps your advice or skills are sought out by many. People may emulate your numismatic habits or perhaps you are a published numismatic author. You know, when an individual mentions your name the thought of COINS immediately comes to mind. Are you such a person? Take Care Ben
Although I do get a lot of questions through my website, I would certainly say no. Then again, there are very few names I could quote concerning collecting as I dont care much about where the information I get comes from as long as I get it. I consider collecting it a bit like communism, the people do not stand out as much as the coins and information that I treat like open source...All who need the ingormation should have free access to it. Less money one spends on other things besides coins the better....its a habby and its about collecting coins for me, not collecting books on coins. I know a lot of people dont like it but instead of spending money for books I prefer to save the money and buy the coins. I still need the info in the books so I scan pages, have others scan pages from books they own and pass said info around freely...I look to have all info on all coins free and online. and I know very few book authors names save the big ones in the fields I collect (like notgeld) or the big reference books like Krause.
You did answer or you would not have posted. For me the answer is no. I know enough to be dangerous, enough to voice an opinion - but not enough experience to 100% certain at times. See the 1922 opinions - I am positive of the source of the coin, but listen to what others have stated. To validate this I will get a professional opinion from a TPG'er just for sake of mind. :mouth:
At my place of employment (500 +), anybody who has a coin or currency related question comes to me. Outside of work..........no.
I am not a 'force' in that sense... I simply 'force' the issue when it comes to seeing the coins my hubby brings home. Him I have difficulty with. Now when my 10 year old grand daughter has coins she brings them to me to see if I need them for my collection. I say, start them out young and they will be in step with you in this hobby. jeankay
I consider myself a casual collector. I enjoy coins and have learned a lot from reading and from CoinTalk, but not enough to have reached an expert level in any aspect of the hobby. It probably comes out to being about 1/3 collector and 2/3 investor.
If you consider a person that hoards coins and tries to use lessons learned here when buying collectable coins, then I am a force. Really though, there is so much to learn about coins, even trying to be a force in one series would take so much time and energy, I would say there are few that are a true force in the hobby. One thing I lack is retention/memory to be a force. I find it so hard to remember dates and particulars that go along with them. There is a lot of knowleddge I have retained, but have forgotten so much more. One of my Redbook copies is litterally falling apart from rereading the same information over and over.
Far from it. I'm a Lincoln collector who is just hangin on for the ride. Wheel and deal as I can, but 90% collector.
I know what you mean, I have casually collected thousands of coins. But, To answer Ben: They FORCED themselves on me! I had no choice: I went, I saw, I bought! (with all due apologies to Caesar.)
Being from a very small town; I'm almost local celebrity here....lolz.....More as a postal stamp collector than coin and banknote collector (ofcourse casual one).....I'm invited to local exhibitions as judge and also founded local philately club which now has now bout 80 members......I have inspired many to take numismatics and philately as hobby (even folks in 50s).......I'm 23 now and guess it helped that I started collecting at 7.........regarding coins I'm not sure I'm the right person to refer to......but people here careless bout grading and preservation and all and think type quantity matters.....In that case too I help them out as I'm one of the lucky few to have access to internet and a credit card.....
That is true..there was a lady at the coin store this last thursday that bought a smattering of holders and various coins(low dollar) to provide to her grandchildren to help them start learning. It was great.
That one forumite who knew all of the inside scoop on the US Mint (DM86 I think his name was?) I consider him to be a force because people made decisions based on his advice (which was always correct).
indian coins absolutely, people ask for help with world coins a lot and paper money, every now and then us coins
Same here, at work and within my family (even distant) people will ask me questions. Aunts and uncles will even call from the otherside of the country to ask a question. Outside of them lot I ask others for info on coins.
I remember him (but don't remember his name). His inside hints always helped everyone prepare for the unexpected. and no, I am not a force. I believe I can help grade walkers and peace dollars well, but that's my limit.
I am constantly learning, but also helping to educate as well. Soemday I hope to become a force in the hobby.
