are "unopened" US mint sets really unopened?

I recently bought an "unopened" 1956 proof set for 18 dollars, but I was wondering if these things are often opened, and then resealed? I haven't opened mine yet, but I still get the feeling that these things must be too good to be true. Any thoughts on this?

Some are and some are fakes....one way it can be done is to print your own envelope with a printer...and the other is to reseal it after its open....

Is there a good way to tell if it is an authentic unopened set?

I have never heard of a way...I have opened the ones I get that are sealed...just in case.

We've had a lot of discussion about that - do a search.
