Are these worth "conserving" and with what TPG?

    Hi All,
I've posted 2 coins below. An 1847 Silver Dollar and a 1795 Large One Cent. Both are a little grimy. As I am new to collecting, I don't know how to tell if the condition of these coins warrant "conservation" by a TPG or not. Additionally, if they are, I don't know which TPG to use - ANACS seems to have a specialty in these things, but I am not sure.

    Can you help me?
    Thanks!

Hello. I would just leave them be. Not much you can do with either especially the 1795 LC. What is your concern with the first coin?

I could see getting the green spots off of the reverse of the dollar but the large cent is damaged enough that I wouldn't bother.

Keepers, but to me I would not sent them in. @wxcoin is correct about the green spots,

For being new to collecting, you went for some pretty interesting coinage! Those are both great coins, even if the cent is rough.

The Large Cent I would leave as is but the Dollar I would send in. Those green spots need to be made into history, like they never existed. Conserve and grade that coin.

ANACS is a good deal at $59 for 10 coins. They did a great job with my Canadian silver after sitting in 2x2s for 50 years. Not such a great deal if you're only submitting one or two coins. See their FAQ here https://anacs.com/anacs-conservation-service/ If you had 10 coins their show special is $140 for 10, tack on conservation and other coins might benefit from it too. If it's only these two I'm not sure if I would bother.

No clue about ICG. The big two charge a % of the coin's value with a minimum (not sure it that's per coin, NGC is $25 minimum).

One of ICG's principals is an active member here, and they've got a CoinTalk special, which last I checked was $10/coin (for grading). I don't remember their pricing for conservation, but I think it's considerably lower than the competition, and we've seen some outstanding successes posted here.

$10 additional for conservation. So you'd be into each coin for $20.

Thank you all for the great direction! @SensibleSal66 - my concern with the first coin (the dollar) is that it has the green spots. Apologies for the delay in responding as I just recently realized that this site is back up and running. Yay!

The 1795 has value enough IMO that I personally would send it to ICG for "helping" it look better even if they charged a lot more. Jim
