Are these crocodiles?

Hey everyone,

Happy Saturday morning!

My brother is looking at getting his second/third (?) scarab and has found one that he's interested in. But, we can't quite make out what's on it.

I think it kind of looks like crocodiles based on other scarabs I've looked at.

Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Not crocodiles, aliens.

 

Erin, I am out of the house today. I will try to go through a couple of my Scarabs books, and see if there are any similar types. They look like 2 crocs to me... I will also see what I can find on the two devices down the middle. I am new to this too, but Scarabs are very interesting.

Be sure you are comfortable with the Seller and the Provenance...

Holy cow, Alegandron! You have an awesome collection! My brother and I would both love to get a scarab with a cartouche on it.

That's a really sweet coin you have too. It would be really cool if was determined to be from Netanebo II. I've heard a little bit about this coin. I'll have to look into it more.

From CNG's archives, notes about the origin of these coins:

Weiser’s attribution of this type to the Egyptian Pharaoh Nektanebo is primarily based on a loose typological similarity to an issue of gold coins that are Egyptian. While this attribution is still followed by some, more recent evidence has almost certainly shown this to be incorrect. All of these bronze coins seem to originate from sources outside of Egypt, particularly the northern Levant, which would not likely be in the circulation pattern of a 4th century BC bronze issue of Egypt (an argument that these may have been struck while Nektanebo was active in Syria during the Satrapal Revolt is completely implausible). Also, with the exception of the Athenian tetradrachm imitations that were likely struck in Egypt for external trade, there was no internal monetized economy that would be necessary to support such a bronze issue. In his book on the coins of Roman Syria, Butcher notes that the style of the leaping ram is very similar to 3rd century AD issues of Antioch, but also notes that it is a common type at Damaskos. Furthermore, Butcher notes that Newell had attributed two of these in the ANS to an uncertain mint in Commagene, although his rationale is unknown. Thus, Butcher attributes these to an uncertain mint in northern Syria in the 3rd century AD.

 

I have a few faiences also (Eyes of Horus). I am trying to focus on Royal Scarabs, although the "cool factor scarab" is probably my Scarab/Sphinx version to everyone else looking at them. I have been complemented by a couple Dealers for having the tough to find Seti I due to its association with the biblical pharaoh (questionable), but it seems to be sought after...

 

Still makes a cools story. And I still see some articles disputing even the Syria attribution.

 

Yeah, I guess it's simply "unknown" at this time.

Poor Leo - RIP!
I used to have a 6 foot Iguana (nose to tail) that would whip my BIG German Shepard into shape with his tail. A Savannah Monitor, and a Black & White Tegu that was so beautiful but was the meanest SOB you ever wanted to meet - when he would escape his cage YOU were the hunted NOT him!!

Thanks Markus. Those were some crazy lizards you had. I'd love to have a tegu someday. For now, I have a bearded dragon, Schneider's skink, a golden gecko and a fat-tail gecko. They're my children.

I love your artifacts, Topcat, David and Alegandron. Wow! Antiquities opens up a whole new world. Although, I have a scarab and lead sling bullet, I have to stick with coins because my wallet already hates me enough.

My brother might have already bought the scarab in the OP, he mentioned it when he got home from work. It has a crazy colour to it. I'm guessing it had some sort of glaze on it.
