Group, One coin that I got a while back is very rubbed out so there is no intrinsic value, but it is still a bit of a puzzle for me to identify it. There are enough clues on the coin for me to figure it out, if I had the right resources. Only problem is that it is an 18th century coin and I only have SCWC for the 19th and 20th centuries. Are there any online resources that anyone knows about for 18th century coins? I think that this is from one of the German States. I could easily describe the size and composition and the image on one side of the coin is clear but about half of the inscription on the other side is not, including the denomination. I'm sure that if I post a photo of it here, 5 people will tell me exactly what it is but I really want to try to figure it out by myself as much as possible. Thanks, -Daniel
Daniel, I don't of any specifc website that list all the German States coins, you may just need to get a copy of SCWC - 18th century. You know you really need one anyway .... right !! You never have enough reference books in numismatics
I usually only think of coinarchives.com for ancients, but I'll give it a try for this too. Thanks, -Daniel
Amazing! I found it there right away - thank you. It is German States \ Saxe Gotha-Altenburg, 1705, 1 Heller. You can see it in a lot of 4 coins here (it is the one on the bottom right): http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=657494&AucID=481&Lot=940 or another one similar to is here (a slightly different obverse, but the same reverse): http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.php?LotID=302927&AucID=220&Lot=3312 Only thing is that they don't give a reference for the one in the 4 coin lot, but you can clearly see that it was minted in 1705. I went to the Krause website (Numismaster.com) and they have no variety of it for that date. They only have a silver coin for 1705. Oh well, the search goes on... -Daniel
